UNWLA Washington, D.C. Liaison Officer Attends U.S. Department of State Briefing A t the request o f U N W L A President Iryna K urow yckyj, U N W L A 's Washington, D .C. Liaison Officer Oksana Xenos attended a U .S. Department o f State briefing on Decem ber 1 1 , 2002. During the event, National Security Advisor Dr. Condoleezza Rice briefed an audience o f approximately 30 invited guests, representatives from eight ethnic communities in the United States with ties to several Eurasian coun tries recently accepted or currently under consideration for entry into N A T O . The Ukrainian contingent in cluded our U N W L A liaison officer, U C C A President M ykhailo Saw kiw , U N A President Stefan Kaczaraj, Ihor Kotliarchuk, and Eugene Iwanciw. In her introductory remarks, Dr. Rice made no reference to Ukraine's chances o f acceptance into N A T O . She was, however, clearly anticipating ques tions on the issue o f Ukraine and was prepared to speak on the subject. In response to a question from M r. Kotliarchuk, Dr. Rice minced few words in chas tising Ukraine for allegedly faltering on political and economic reforms. She stated that Ukraine has a long w ay to go to prove that it is truly a democratic state worthy o f integration with the W est and membership in N A T O . She unfavorably compared Ukraine to other ex-communist nations that have recently been invited to join N A T O and that are also expected to be ac cepted into the European Union. Dr. Rice further attacked what the Bush ad ministration perceives as pervasive government influ ence over the media in Ukraine, including alleged at tempts by Ukraine's President Kuchm a to silence his critics, among them certain journalists. She noted that rather than merely voicing these concerns, the Bush administration is doing something constructive to im prove the independence o f Ukraine's media. It has, she asserted, initiated a collaboration between high level media leaders from the U .S. and Ukraine to facilitate an exchange o f ideas on press freedom issues and a discussion o f the means to accomplish the same. In response to another attendee's question, Dr. Rice discussed the Bush administration's position on Russia's relations with the Chechens. She began by strongly criticizing the Chechen terrorists' attack on a M oscow theater, which she compared to the 9 /11 ter rorist attacks on the U .S. She then stated that Russia, nevertheless, will have to devise a political resolution o f its problems in Chechnya, a comment that was somewhat surprising to the members o f the Ukrainian contingent. Encore! In the Novem ber 2002 issue o f Our Life, we published an article on a successful event hosted by the Philadelphia Regional Council - an open house week end that included a special presentation o f the recently published Lysty tak dovho idut'. Tw o wonderful results o f the Soyuzanky D ays weekend deserve honorable mention in this issue A s evidenced by the photograph that accom panies this article, the event fostered cross-generation communication between women who have been active leaders in our organization for many decades and women who are emerging as the leaders o f tomorrow. This photograph captures the essence o f one o f our organization's most cherished goals - giving women the opportunity to share their vision and life experi ences with others as they work to make the world a kinder and gentler place. The second wonderful result o f Soyuzanky Days is measured in financial terms. Guests showed their enthusiasm for the program by purchasing copies o f Lysty tak dovho idut ' for themselves or as gifts for others. The $1,6 0 0 collected from the sale o f the book, designated as a contribution to the U N W L A Publica tion Fund, has been forwarded to U N W L A headquar ters in N Y C . It is hoped that this contribution will serve as the impetus for new publishing endeavors in the near future. “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2003 15 Stephanie Wochok, President of Branch 53 (established 1937) in an animated discussion with Halyna Martyn, President of Branch 128 (established 2002).
