OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America V ol. L X J A N U A R Y 2003 Editor: T A M A R A S T A D N Y C H E N K O Merry Christmas and a Happy blew Year to all who celebrate Christmas with Ukraine! FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT A s the N ew Y ear begins, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who sent wonderful Christmas and N ew Y ear greetings to the U N W L A . The cards and letters we received were heart warming and en couraging. I would like to share with you excerpts from a few o f these messages. These excerpts echo the senti ments o f many o f those who wrote to thank our organization for its past work and to wish us success and fortitude as we continue working for the good o f Ukrainians all over the world, and especially for our sisters and brothers in Ukraine. W e received, for example, an official letter from the Foreign M inistry o f Ukraine. Signed by the Foreign Minister, his Excellency Anatoliy Zlenko, the Christmas greeting included an inspirational message. “ W e always remember, that in building the new nation, your organization has done its share. The devotion o f women in politics and the social arena for the good o f the Ukrainian nation is appreciated by our government." Another greeting was received from the newly elected president o f the W orld Federation o f Ukrainian W om en’ s Organization, M aria Shkambara, who wrote, “ I wish you faith and spiritual strength in continuing your work for the good o f Ukraine and its people." There were many others, all expressing an appreciation for our organization's efforts to improve the life o f Ukrainians in Ukraine and in the Diaspora and all encouraging members o f our organization to continue fighting the good fight in 2003 and beyond. A s president o f this wonderful organization, I was proud to read such acco lades. W e are all remembered by our deeds, and to know that our deeds have been recognized and appreciated by others is gratifying. Such recognition, however, is also humbling. It is a reminder that U N W L A programs begun in 2002 and in previous years cannot stop. Because the work we do is so important, we have a responsibility to make certain that it is done well. And in order for this to happen, our organization needs devoted and active members who are ready to commit themselves to our programs and projects, ensuring that they are successful. To fulfill this great responsibility, the U N W L A must start the N ew Y ear with an all out membership drive. Membership is the foundation o f every organization and it makes organizations powerful. Attracting new members is a goal each and every one o f us should make a personal challenge. And we should all face this challenge confi dently, because while the U N W L A expects much from its members, it also gives much. U N W L A programs, whether they be cultural, educational, or charitable, are worthwhile programs; they provide a noble purpose and they are so varied that every woman can find something that is o f interest to her: The НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2003 13
