XLIX FEBRUARY 1992 Editor: Marta Baczynsky NATIONAL BOARD MEETING UNWLA’s National Board met on November 9 and 10, 1991 in New York City. The meeting was attended by the organization’s president Maria Savchak, members of the Executive Board, all standing committee chairs, nine presidents of Regional Councils and the chair of the Auditing Committee. In addressing the participants of the meeting, the President reported on the work of the organization over the last year. She stressed the importance of the Mem bership Committee and its efforts in recruiting new members. The following points were raised: 1. The availability of the Executive Board to aid branches seeking assistance. The Board will attempt to provide, if only in part, the necessary answers and solutions. 2. The importance of inter-regional conferences of standing committees (such as welfare, membership, etc.) whose success can be attributed to the Regional Coun cils. 3. The election of Iryna Kurowyckyj, who has been a longtime member of the NCW (National Council of Women) Hospitality Committee, to the post of first vice president of NCW. Maria Tomorug has become the organization’s treasurer. 4. UNWLA sponsored journalist Valentyna Smirnov from Kiev to attend an international conference of women journalists in Yugoslavia. 5. WCFU has financial problems. UNWLA is one of the member organizations which fully pays its dues. Branches should support WCFU only through the proper channels of UNWLA. 6. The Ukrainian Museum is celebrating is 15th anniversary. Branches were urged to honor this event and support the Museum. 7. $3,500 will be paid from the Eva Stashkiv Fund in the form of scholarships to support three students from Ukraine. 8. The Executive Board met with Athena Pashko, co-president of UWNL in Lviv. The Board also promised to purchase a copying machine for the office of UNWL in Lviv. 9. OUR LIFE magazine is published on time, is well written and designed. However it needs financial support. 10. The second edition of a well-received cook book, Ukrainian Foods by Zenovia Terlecky has been pub lished. Branches can utilize this book for the purpose of fundraising. 11. Ivanna Ratych and Lidia Czernyk participated in the convention of the Committee of Aid to Ukraine in the capacity of observers. UNWLA’s by-laws do not allow it to be a member of another organization, charit able or otherwise. Branches of UNWLA must adhere to the terms of the by-laws and refrain from contributing to causes and committees not under the jurisdiction of UNWLA’s welfare program. 12. In order to help Ukraine, organizations in the free world such as UNWLA must have a sound financial base. Maria Tomorug, corresponding secretary, spoke of her trip to Ukraine and said that in the specialized child ren’s hospital in Lviv she was pleased to see a plaque honoring UNWLA for the organization’s help. Mrs. To morug attended the first congress of UNWL in Czer- nivtsi in August. Financial secretary Marta Danyluk presented the financial report of 1990 which showed the administra tion of OUR LIFE in the red. Iryna Chaban, the magazines’ editor, reported that Tamara Stadnychenko-Cornellison and Ivanna Ratych have joined the editorial staff. She also pointed out that although the magazine is prepared on schedule, it is the mailing which governs its dispatch to subscribers. The following were individual reports of vice pre sidents: 1.
