Through out the club year, varying in fre quency, entertainments and af fairs, such as bazaars, dances, bingo parties etc., are held for the benefit of recogniz-ed chari ties and operating expenses of the Branch. Some of the recog nized charities included in the past have been the American Red Cross to which both financial and blood donations have been made, the Salvation Army, the Cancer Drive, United Service Organiza tions, and others In addition, club members have prepared and donated scrapbooks to hospital ized children, food and clothing packages have been sent to dis placed persons, and individual do nations have been made to fami lies suffering under extreme per sonal hardship. In these critical times, our organization recognizes the im portance of emphasizing our bas ic principles of promoting the idieals of freedom, democracy, AN OUTLINE OF UKRAINIAN EMBROIDERY FOR THE MODERN MISS AND MRS. Podolia and the weaving stitch Last month’s article showed how to work this interesting stitch and mention was made o-f two regions in Ukraine where it was once much employed: Kiev and Pofesya. Of those who were interested and tried this way of embroidering I ask, “Wasn’t it easy and weren’t you surprised to see how quickly it went? !” We are continuing with the weaving stitch this month be cause from Podolia, “a land abun dant in bread and milk, the gold en apple of Ukraine, the heart of honey’s scented with flowers and colored with gardens,”’ has come a very important group of de signs featuring it that must be presented separately because they are executed in a different man ner. humanitariasm and patriotism, and our efforts will be extended in this direction to influence bv example, the many displaced Uk rainians who are now being ac corded the benefits of the American heritage. A. Kean, Pres. How it differs To work the stitch as they did in Podolia it is necessiary to have the wrong side of the material (the side you will not be viewing when the piece is completed) fac ing you. Now this will be con fusing at first; I know it was very much so to me. However do not be di'scouraged for you will find out later that not only do the threads Це better but that it is actually easier to work that way. The latter is so because Podolian weaving stitch designs are very, very, massive and require careful counting of the threads of the cloth yon are embroidering to make them possible, and this is more easily done from the wrong side. Another thing that distinguish es the Podolian weaving stitch from that of the Kievan or Polis- syan is that when the finished piece is held the way it is to be viewed, the embroidery threads lie longitudinally.
