H A N D IN H A N D Each year in May we set aside one day to honor “Mother.” All year long for the most part, mom’s devotion and sacrifices are taken for granted. Then on the sunny day in May, momo suddenly becomes the center of attention. There are gifts, flowers and speeches. We are keenly aware of love, thoughtfulness, under standing and sacrifice that for some reason always go hand in hand with the word “mom.” Just as we take for granted the untiring efforts of mother to bind the family together in a harmo nious unit, so do we assume non chalantly the deeper meaning of the value of belonging to a fam ily of fine background, honor and character such as Soyuz Ukrai nok Arrueryky (Ukrainian Nation al Women’s League of America) represents. For Soyuz Ukrainok Ameryky is truly a good mother of Ukrainian women, just and loving; just and loving in the same sense as our mothers. Although we don’t express our appreciation overly at all times to our mother or to Soyuz Ukra inok, we are aware none-the-less of the role that each plays in our lives. It is good, however, to set aside a specific time to meditate over our good fortune; to think ■4* The aim of the Ukrainian Ju nior League, Branch 52 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc., consist ent with that of the parent organ ization, is to bring together wo men of Ukrainian birth and de scent, living in the United States of America, for social, education al, civic and humanitarian co operation and activities for mu- and to recognize openly, in order to gain a deeper insight. Striking parallels can be drawn between your mother, my mother and our Soyuz Ukrainok. Since time immemorial' motherhood ex emplified deprivation for the hap piness and comfort materially and spiritually of the offspring. In her same way Soyuz Ukrainok in her twenty six years existence in the United Stages has represented her family as a group of Ukrain ian women primarily engrossed in heartfelt helpfulness. Even as mother’s first concern is the wel fare of her family, so is Soyuz Ukrainok’s first concern of the welfare of Ukrainians here and abroad. The same pride that a mother feels in a new born youngster was fie It by Soyuz Ukrainok when she helped in creation of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations through the World Congress of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations in November 1948 held in Philadelphia, Pa.
