wrote to Pres. Kennedy to have Shevchen ko Stamp issued and also to release Cuban prisoners at Christmastime. First year culminated with Christmas program at which members and their fam ilies sang carols, led by S. Karp, and en joyed children’s program. S. Klawsnik was Refreshment Chairman. Elected to office for 1963 were: Pres. — M. Dushnyck; Vice-Pres. — M. Lesaw- yer; Sec’y — A. Kosciw; Treas. — A. Bez- korowajny; Asst. Treas. — D. Chupa. First project was travelogue film on Ukraine and Eastern Europe, presented by Mr. and Mrs. M. Kuscenko, which at tracted large turnout at UIA. M. Lesaw- yer was chairman. A t second musicale Lesia Waskiw, soprano, and Christine Osadca, pianist, were talents presented. Chairman was A. Harrison. Branch pre sented “Ukraine: A Concise Encyclopedia” to Seton Hall University. Letters written to : Congressman H. Smith to support Flood Resolution to establish Captive Na tions Committee in House of Representa tives, to White House, Senators and Cong, to sponsor Shevchenko Library and Shev chenko stamp, to Washington Post pro testing its attacks on Shevchenko statue project, and to Cong. T. Dulski for Shev chenko stamp. Several letters reprinted in Congressional Record. President invited 2 guest lecturers to address members — Brother Geo. Harken of Maryknoll Order, who spoke on spiritual values, and H. Prociuk, whose theme was “Human Relations.” Branch sponsored a Ukrainian cooking class at UIA, which I. Padooh, S. Saldan and E. Triska conducted and in which Br. 53 took part. Used cloth ing collected and delivered by M. Smejka and I. Czarnecky, Welfare Co-Chairmen, to Br. 64 for distribution. A t Christmas branch presented Ukrainian family with basket of food. Christmas program held, with 0. S. Li- teplo in charge. M. Dushnyck spoke on Ukrainian Christmas customs, children presented a program and members caroled. Branch was co-sponsor, with Okruzhna Rada and Mrs. A. Braznick, of a Ukrain ian “Bridal Party” at annual Масу Bridal Show at Carnegie Hall. Arranged by M. Dushnyck. In 1964 following elected: Pres. — M. Demey; Vice-Pres. — M. Fisanick; Sec’y — S. Kotyk; Asst. Sec’y — D. Pifko; Treas. — A. Bezkorowajny. M. Dushnyck made Honorary President. First big event was dance at Downtown Athletic Club, with M. Demey as chairman. Branch participated in historic ceremo nies in Washington, D. C. at unveiling of Shevchenko Statue. Several members marched in parade of 100,000, proudly carrying Br. 72 banner. Third musicale featured Chrystyna Bodnar, mezzo-sopra no, with Prof. I. Sonevytsky as accompa nist, and Halyna Sarach, cellist, accompa nied by her mother, A. Sarach-Bunin. Chairman was A. Harrison. In distinguish ed audience were United Nations guests, invited by M. Dushnyck. Recital reviewed in Svoboda by Prof. W. Cisyk. An educational step forward was Ukrainian class conducted by H. Prociuk. A card party was held, with M. Ricket and M. Demey as Co-Chairmen. Branch took part in “Ukrainian Day” at World’s Fair N. Y. State Pavilion, with L. Bachonko painting pysanky and members partici pating. Chairman was D. Pifko. Branch received plaque for participation. L. Bo- chonko demonstrated egg painting at Man hattan College and at branch meeting. Mr. J. Revay showed film on Carpatho- Ukraine’s struggle for independence in 1939. Members served as hostesses at Wom en’s Hospitality Lounge at World’s Fair, where they gave information to visitors and distributed new UNW LA pamphlet. Several members attended reception there for American and ethnic women leaders M. Dushnyck served as chairman of these events. Branch took part in 20th an niversary celebration of OUR LIFE Mag azine, with M. Demey and H. Prociuk on program. Letters written to Cong. Dulski regarding Shevchenko Stamp and Library and to thank him for all his efforts. At Christmas a monetary gift given to 160 www.unwla.org
