Board and members of 37 UNWLA Branch in Detroit, Mich. CHAPTER 37, LESYA UKRAINKA DETROIT, MICHIGAN For twenty-eight years, Chapter 37, whose membership has never exceeded twenty, has pursued a community service program of an educational, cultural and civic nature, at the same time fully em bracing the aims and purposes of the UNWLA. Activities ranged from lectures, plays, musical programs, folk art exhibits, fash ion shows of Ukrainian costumes, leader ship workshops, Easter egg coloring, em broidery classes, traditional food cookery, and recently, the knitting of afghans for hospital patients. During World War II members participated in War Bond Drives and Red Cross work. Chapter 37 has worked closely with International Insti tute and its projects, such as International Village Exhibits, the 250th Detroit Birth day Celebration in ’51, the annual Old Market and the Detroit-Windsor Freedom Festivals. Literary programs, bake sales, and games parties, often featuring hand cross stitched articles as prizes, provided income which enabled the Chapter to contribute thousands of dollars to various publica tions, to students in Western Ukraine, Ukrainian Relief Committee Fund, local Community Fund Drives, Parochial schools and churches, UNW LA Scholarship Fund, National Temple and Congress Much emphasis has been placed on con tacts with American women's clubs and participation in activities of our Ameri can Community. The late Julia Shustake- wich, first national president of UNW LA, was the guiding force in launching the Chapter's public relations programs. Mem bers’ appearances before clubs, church and school groups, served as vehicles for shar ing knowledge of Ukraine, its history, cul ture and folk arts. Since 1958 Chapter 37 has been an active member of the Detroit Federation of Women’s Clubs. As a result of ever widening contacts, the members of Chapter 37 recognize that in today’s world a greater challenge lies ahead for all members of UNW LA, with deeper and broader organizational pur poses than those of the past. Chapter 37 members strongly believe that it is impor tant to develop a sense of appreciation for our great United States, so that we can make a worthy contribution to the Coun try in which we live. 117 www.unwla.org
