BRANCH 53 SUA, ASTORIA, N. Y. Branch 53 in Astoria, N. Y., was or ganized in 1957 by a group of American women of Ukrainian descent. The mem bers meet informally in each others homes to hear the latest news about UNW LA ac tivities, a talk by a member or guest on some timely topic or to plan a cultural or fund-raising activity. Besides joining oth er New York City branches in Regional programs, Branch 53 has given two Em broidered Fashion Shows at the New York World’s Fair, several Ukrainian exhibits at local libraries, pysanka classes, ceramic class, demonstration Sviat Vechery, Spilni Sviachene, lectures on life in other coun tries, etc. A substantial amount of chil dren’s clothing was collected and delivered to St. Basil’s Orphanage. Fund raising ac tivities like the sale of small embroidered articles and bingos have enabled the Branch to contribute to many worthy causes (UNW LA Scholarship Fund, Press Fund, Mother and Child Fund, Lesya Ukrainka Memorial, Holy Cross Church Building Fund, etc.) and to finance its permanent project — the donation of books on Ukrainian subjects to public libraries. Fifty such books, including cookbooks, his tories, folk tales, folk arts, poetry, etc., have been donated to date. Two Ukrainian cookbooks were sent to two leading wom en’s magazines (McCalls, Good House keeping) and have already been used as the source for a feature page on foreign dishes. In addition, a large number of books in Ukrainian have been added to the Foreign Language Division of the libra ries. 1965 Officers: Alexandra L. Riznyk, President; Ann C.
