BRANCH 52, NATALIA KOBRYNSKA PH ILADELPHIA, PA. The Soyuz Ukrainok Ameryky Branch 52, Natalia Kobrynska, of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, was organized in October, 1937. At the meet ing Mrs. Anna Sywulak outlined the ob jectives and purposes of the organization, and the nucleus of the Branch was formed. Teenagers at the time, but keeping in mind the all important purposes of the Ukrainian National Women’s League, to unite Ukrainian women who were born in Ukraine and the American born women of Ukrainian descent, to preserve the Ukrainian heritage and customs, promote our culture among Americans, help our fellowman and be active in our communi ties, the young members wasted no time in activating the Branch. Affairs planned through the years were Christmas Bazaar, card and bingo par ties, minstrel show, cabaret nights, dances, collection of clothing for our needy breth ren in Europe, visiting the sick, making scrap books for the Heart Hospital for Children and St. Joseph’s Hospital, family summer picnics, white elephant sales, em broidering pillows, making Ukrainian cos tumes for dolls, selling jewelry, going Christmas caroling, honoring the Mothers, arranging anniversary celebrations, organ izing bus trips. Funds derived from these affairs were donated to St. Basil’s Orphanage, St. Jo- saphat’s Seminary, Washington, D. C., St. Josaphat’s Parish in Frankford, Pa., Ma nor Junior College, The “Bugler,” a paper which was published about Ukrainian acti vities and items of interest for our Ukrain ian service men during World War II and mailed to them free of charge. Ukrainian Canadian Service Club in England received aid from us in 1945. The Ukrainian Relief Committee of Philadelphia also received large donations as we wanted in this way to aid our brethren overseas. Arranged a party for the indigent folks at the Home for the Aged at Riverview, donated to the Lesia Ukrainka Fund. Donated a Ukrain ian doll made by the members which was raffled off by the Juniors of the Philadel phia Federation of Womens Clubs and Al lied Organizations. Money derived from the raffle was used to purchase records for the Fuhrman Home for Crippled Chil dren in Philadelphia and dresses were pur chased and donated for the little girls of Ukrainian widows when they arrived in America. Smaller donations were given annually to the Cancer Hospital, Cancer Fund, Sal vation Army and Red Cross. Knowing that the Ukrainian National Women’s League was a nonprofit organiza tion, the Branch acted accordingly and at times when its funds were depleted the “Okruzna Rada” (Philadelphia Council of the Ukrainian National Women’s League), helped monetarily. Proud as they were of Ukrainian herit age and customs, members participated in the International Institute Folk Festivals dressed in Ukrainian costumes, as well as in the Christmas programs of the Phila delphia Federation of Women’s Clubs and Allied Organizations and the Junior group of the Federation. Many certificates of recognition for their efforts were awarded to the Branch. Representatives took part in charitable drives, in the first Ukrainian Congress which was held in Washington, D. C. in 1940. Representatives attended United Nations sessions in 1947, giving full report to the Branch, delegates were sent to the Youth’s League of North American con ventions as well as participated in the Conventions of the Ukrainian National Women’s League and its other activities. Also Branch 52 members appeared on Quiz Radio and TV shows and sent recipes to American newspapers. Truly, it can be said that the first 15 years of the Branch’s existence activities were carried on in full swing, since there were five and six projects each year, but as the members got married and began to 138 www.unwla.org
