SOYUZ UKRAINOK, BRANCH 36 CHICAGO — SOUTHSIDE (OLHA BASARAB) Branch 36 of the UNW LA was founded on February 25, 1932, and the first of ficers were: Mrs. Anna Brudny, President, Mrs. Helen Brelinska-Krull, Secretary; Mrs. Victoria Larson, Treasurer: Mrs. Mary Gizowsky and Mrs. Anastasia Sa gan, Auditors. Many of the original 25 members are still active through these 33 years of ex istence. Our main projects have been focused on social welfare, church and school activi ties in our Ukrainian community, helping the needy in Ukraine and Europe. A t first we helped by sending financial aid to the cause of political prisoners, assist “Ridna Shkola,” the Ukrainian press, Vet erans of the Halytzka Army, and for the cause of the artificial famine in Ukraine. After World War II, our activities in cluded sending money and some CARE packages to the displaced persons — these funds were obtained mainly from house to house collections and caroling at Christ mas time. We continue our interest in the Ukrainian orphans, “Mother and Child” fund and in the work of the Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations. Though small in number, our branch has faithful participants in whatever en deavors we undertake. They cooperate generously and donate their time and serv ices. Each year we attempt at least one fund-raising affair and though not all are equally successful, our members remain enthusiastic. For the first time this April, we spon sored a display of Ukrainian arts at the south branch of the Public Library. The exhibit included pysanky, embroideries, woodwork, and ceramics. “Yes, through all my tears I still will smile Sir.g my songs though troubles round me loom Hopeless, still hope on against all odds, I will live! Away, ye thoughts of gloom!” LESYA UKRAINKA Officers: K. Pierowycz, President; A. Brudny, Vice-President; A. Gizowski, Treasurer; M. Rodak, Recording Secre tary; H.
