НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Листопад 2024 7 A Conversation with the Past From the Our Life Archives: The 1990s Each issue throughout this 80th anniversary year of Our Life features an article from one of the magazine’s eight decades. This month, Our Life editor Romana Labrosse shines the spotlight on the 1990s. It is impossible to scour the Our Life archives from the 1990s and ig- nore the seminal events of 1991, the year Ukraine declared its inde - pendence from the latest incarnation of the russian empire, the Soviet Union. The events, the activity, the anticipation, anxiety, and excite- ment of that time all seemed to come to a peaceful, joyous pause in late August when Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (Supreme Council) pro- claimed the country’s independence with these words: Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine In view of the mortal danger surrounding Ukraine in connec- tion with the state coup in the USSR on August 19, 1991, Continuing the thousand-year tradition of state development in Ukraine, Proceeding from the right of a nation to self-determination in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other international legal documents, and Implementing the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic solemnly declares Independence of Ukraine and creation of the independent Ukrainian state – UKRAINE. The territory of Ukraine is indivisible and inviolable. From this day forward, the Constitution and laws of Ukraine only are valid on the territory of Ukraine. This act comes into force upon its approval. VERKHOVNA RADA OF UKRAINE August 24, 1991 The October 1991 issue of Our Life – the first issue produced after Ukraine’s declaration of independence – featured a photo of the cel- ebrations in Kyiv on its cover and reproduced the Declaration inside. The issue included an article by Marta Chomiak that explored women’s history and the relationship between the defense of human rights and women’s rights. Past issues of Our Life are available on the UNWLA website, unwla. org (About Us > Publications).
