НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Листопад 2024 25 Branch 88 Children’s Book Is the Perfect Holiday Gift Features 30 enchanting stories based on traditional Ukrainian themes Petrusia Sawchak , Press Secretary, Branch 88, Philadelphia, PA As the Christmas season approaches, Branch 88 is once again promoting its beautifully illustrated chil - dren’s book, Казки й оповідання на кожну пору року ( Stories for Every Season ). Launched in 2016, the col - lection consists of 30 delightful original tales based on Ukrainian folktales and traditions (28 in Ukrainian and two in English). The stories were originally pub - lished between 1944 and 1962 in Our Life magazine and in the Ukrainian National Association’s Veselka ( The Rainbow ) to entertain the children of Ukrainians who were displaced from their homeland after World War II. Among the authors: Hanna Chornobytska, Ivan Kernytsky, Nina Mudryk-Mrytz, Nina Narkevych, Ivanna Savytska, and Roman Zavadovych. Always fascinated by these stories, Branch 88 Soyu- zianka Christine Shwed, who also served as UNWLA Education Committee Chair from 2005 to 2011, re-cre - ated, compiled, arranged, and designed these stories for the children’s pages of Наше життя / Our Life for three years, and then compiled the stories into Stories for Every Season . As a professional educator, Chris - tine also created follow-up exercises/activities for the stories to develop and promote language and other learning skills as required for the K-3 and K-4 pre - school curriculum. The stories were originally used to enrich the curric- ulum of UNWLA’s branch-run svitlychky (preschools) with new and lively materials. In addition to providing entertainment, says Christine, they taught important educational skills to young children. “The stories and exercises in this book help chil- dren acquire higher order thinking skills and further develop their innate creativity through storytelling and play,” Christine notes. “The materials present - ed can be used to teach a number of different skills taught in preschool, such as recognizing colors, num- The cost of one book is only $15.
