Ukrainian American conductor and music scholar Marika Kuzma has been promoting Ukrainian music in various ways for decades, but her work has be - come even more focused since russia’s full invasion of Ukraine in 2022. “Right after the missiles landed in Kyiv on February 24,” says Marika, “I sent PDFs of My - roslav Skoryk’s ‘Melodia’ to every conductor I knew around the world. Within a week, orchestras played it in London, Stockholm, Milwaukee, and San Francisco. A colleague of mine who is a film editor in Los Angeles and I immediately created a Stand with Ukraine You - Tube video featuring music by the wonderful Ukrainian composer Lesia Dychko.” Since February 2022, Marika has led singers, instrumentalists, and actors in multiple concerts and theater events, among them the Linde - mann Fellows of the Metropolitan Opera in Lysenko’s “Molytva za Ukrainu” in a concert at Lincoln Center; a concert in Hartford, CT, with the St. Joseph’s Cathedral Choir, Solomiya Ivakhiv, and members of the Hartford Symphony; a concert of Ensemble Cherubim at the prestigious Berkeley Festival of Early Music; a poetry reading at the Legacy Theater in Connecticut with local actors, tenor Gene Stenger, and pianist Viktor Markiw; a concert at the New Haven Festival of Arts; and a repeat performance at the Pope John Paul II Shrine At the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, with Ukraine’s Ambassador to the U.S. Oksana Markarova (left) and Director Keri-Lynn Wilson.
