НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Листопад 2024 15 On October 23-24, Tetyana Filevska, Creative Director of the Ukrainian Institute in Kyiv (shown here in conversation with Peter Doroshenko, Director of The Ukrainian Muse - um), shared her insights into the impact of Alexandra Ex - ter’s Ukrainian heritage on her avant-garde art, as well as details of an upcoming guide for museums on decolonizing Ukrainian art. The guide addresses many of the questions the international museum community has faced since the russian invasion and includes guidelines on effectively identifying, collecting, researching, exhibiting, and labeling Ukraine’s cultural artifacts. The back-to-back events high - lighted Ukraine’s rich cultural legacy and ongoing work to preserve its artistic identity. Volia: Ukrainian Modernism Running alongside the Exter exhibition, Volia high - lights the vibrant Ukrainian avant-garde of the early 20th century, including artists like Alexander Archipenko and David Burliuk. The show celebrates the resilience and creative willpower of Ukraine’s artistic community as its members reclaim their heritage from russian imperial narratives. Alexandra Exter: The Stage Is a World On view through January 19, 2025, this landmark exhibition is the first solo presentation of avant-garde artist Alexandra Exter in North America. Featuring over thirty paintings and theater designs, it explores Exter’s pioneering career from 1913 to 1934. Known as the “avant-garde Amazon,” Exter moved fluidly among Kyiv, Odesa, Paris, and Venice, connecting Ukrainian cul - ture with the artistic innovations of early-20th-century Europe. East 6th Street came alive on October 5 with the vibrant energy of Ukrainian culture during the groundbreaking Community Activation event hosted by The Ukrainian Museum and artist Molly Gochman. Taking place right in front of the Museum’s open doors, the event brought together the local community and visitors for a day of celebration and support for Ukraine. From the beats of New York breakdancers to the timeless beauty of Ukrainian traditional crafts, songs, and dances, the streets were filled with culture and connection. But the day wasn’t just about fun – it was also about solidarity. Guests wrote letters to Ukrainian soldiers, created powerful posters, and joined hands in support of Ukraine’s fight for freedom to recreate the 1990 Ukrainian Human Chain of Unity.
