НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Листопад 2024 11 Black Raven Documentary About Holodomor- Genocide Produced by UNWLA Member Their voices were silenced, their faces erased, their sto- ries untold. As the headline of Walter Duranty’s article “There Is No Famine in Ukraine” splashed across The New York Times , millions of Ukrainians were dying due to the forced starvation perpetrated by Joseph Stalin. While Stalin feasted on caviar and champagne, the Black Raven went through the countryside confiscating the villagers’ grain, stock, and foodstuff, leaving them with nothing and with nowhere to go because the villag - es were sealed off from the rest of the world. But that was not enough; the goal was to collectivize these peasants, and if they resisted – to kill them. To break Ukraine’s spirit and crush its aspirations for free - dom, not only was the peasantry to be destroyed be- cause they carried and nurtured the nation’s traditions, language, culture, and ethical values; all of Ukraine’s elite had to be eradicated in order to obliterate Ukraine’s existence. Schools, community centers, and higher edu- cation institutions closed; churches shuttered; religious, artists, writers, directors, conductors, and poets were murdered or sent to Siberia; Ukraine’s Academy of Arts and Sciences ceased to exist. To quote Raphael Lemkin: “This is not simply the case of mass murders, this is a case of GENOCIDE, of destruc- tion not of individuals only, but of a culture and a nation.” In the documentary Black Raven , directed by George Wyhinny and produced by UNWLA member Luba Keske (Branch 111, Los Ange - les, CA), viewers hear the voices, see the fac- es, and learn the stories of the survivors and eyewitnesses of the 1932–1933 Holodomor– Genocide in Ukraine. Black Raven was screened on October 25 at the prestigious United Nations Association Film Festival, followed by a Q&A, and was ex - tremely well received, with many viewers say - ing that they had not previously heard about the Holodomor. Contact Luba Keske at luba.keske@yahoo.com . Luba Keske, producer of the Holodomor film Black Raven , with her husband Walter. Black Raven producer Luba Keske and director George Wyhinny have expressed their gratitude to the UNWLA for its moral and financial support.
