24 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2016 President Petro Poroshenko and Mariya Muzychuk An outstanding student majoring in Phys- ical Culture [фізичної культури], Mariya re- ceived her BS degree in 2014, subsequently earn- ing a Master’s degree from Lviv National Univer- sity of Physical Culture. As a UNWLA Scholarship Program alumna, she has kept us and her sponsor apprised of her achievements. She was sponsored by Michael Shubiak briefly; from 2007 to 2015 her sponsor was Mrs. Maria Besoushko. In a recent letter, Mariya expresses her gratitude to the UNWLA Scholarship Program and to her sponsor, Maria Besoushko, for helping her throughout the years. She writes: “. . . at this time I have earned the title of International Grandmaster, and I am a member of Ukraine’s women’s chess team. I was honored by the Minis- try of Youth and Sports in Ukraine and given the title “Honorary Sport Master of Ukraine.” She is very proud of this achievement and ends her let- ter with the following thought: “I hope that I will honorably defend the honor of Ukraine on the international arena in the years to come.” Mariya, we are very proud of your accom- plishments! We wish you all the best. Good luck and may God bless your future. We also congratu- late and thank Mrs. Besoushko for believing in Mariya and for generously sponsoring her aca- demic endeavors. OUR COVER ARTIST Born in Kyiv, Ukraine in 1907, Liudmyla Morozova began studying art under the direction of noted Ukrainian artist Anna Krueger-Prakhova. She continued her art studies at the Kyiv School of Art & In- dustry (1925–1927) and the Kyiv Art Institute (1928–1931), where her instructors included Mykhailo Kozyk and Fedir Krychevsky. She had her first solo exhibition in Kyiv in 1935. Soviet persecution forced her to leave Ukraine; she fled to Germany in 1944 and immigrated to the United States of America in 1951. In 1952 she began teaching painting at the Queensboro Art Society; she continued teaching with the society for 25 years. Morozova moved to Hunter, New York, in 1962 and became an active member of the Ukrainian Artists Association in the United States. She often worked in the genres of portraiture and landscape, favoring an impressionist style. Her work was included in numerous solo and group exhibi- tions, both nationally and internationally, and is found in public and private collections around the world. She died in Hunter, New York, in 1997. НАША ОБКЛАДИНКА Людмила Морозова народилася у Києві 1907 р.; померла у Гантері, Н.Й., 1997 р. Почала художню освіту в української мисткині Анни Круґер-Прахової. Перша персональна виставка відбулась у Києві 1935 р. Репресії совєтського режиму змусили її виїхати з України, і в 1944 р. вона опинилась у Німеччині. Іміґрувала до США 1951 р.
