“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2016 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 23 Mariya Muzychuk UNWLA Scholarship Program Alumna and Women’s World Chess Champion Awarded Ukraine’s Order for Merit by Anna Krawczuk, Honorary President Award ceremony hosted by Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko in honor of Women’s World Chess Champion Mariya Muzychuk. From left to right: Natalia Muzychuk (award recipient’s mother), President Petro Poroshenko, Mariya Muzychuk, Oleh Muzychuk (father), and Anna Muzychuk (sister). We recently received news from Iryna Kravchuk, of Lviv, Ukraine, that Mariya Muzychuk, one of the former students that she recommended to the UNWLA Scholarship Program in 2006, had been named Women’s World Chess Champion on April 5, 2015, after defeating Russia’s Natalia Pogonina in the final chess match in Sochi, by a score of 2.5 to 1.5. Representing Ukraine, Mariya Muzychuk thus became the 15 th Women’s World Chess Champion. On April 8, 2015, in honor of her great achievement, Ukraine’s President Petro Po- roshenko awarded Mariya Muzychuk the national Order for Merit. He congratulated Mariya, her parents and trainers, and her sister Anna (who is Women’s European champion and reigning Women’s World Blitz Champion). The UNWLA Scholarship Program first heard of Mariya when she was an 8 th grade stu- dent in Stryj, Ukraine. Even at such a young age, she had great interest and talent in chess. In her autobiography, which we received on February 14, 2006, she wrote; “I was born on September 21, 1992, in Stryj, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine. At this time I am in the 3 rd class of gymnasium . . . and am homeschooled, due to my competitive chess schedule. My parents are professional trainers and started training me [to play chess] when I was 3 years old. I love this game, and enjoy taking part in chess matches.” Through the coming years, Mariya partic- ipated in numerous chess competitions and tour- naments, earning many titles and medals at all age levels. During this time she received an Hon- orary Men’s Master rank. And nine years later, Mariya Muzychuk became Women’s World Chess Champion. As this article is being prepared for publication, Mariya is getting ready for an upcom- ing match, which is scheduled for March 2016. During this match she will be defending her title against challenger Hou Yifan of China, who chose not to compete in 2015, and whose Fédération Internationale des Échecs ( FIDE) rating is 2676, the highest women’s rating in the world, which makes her No. 1. female chess player in the world.
