14 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2013 “I look forward to this opportunity to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine and believe this is a critical moment for Ukraine in its long struggle to be a strong independent country in charge of its own destiny,” said the 8th Ambass a- dor to Ukraine, Geoffre y Pyatt. U.S. Deputy Secr e- tary of State William J. Burns administered the oath of office to the Ambassador on July 30th, with over 250 invited guests, including dozens of dignitaries, in attendance. Following the cerem o- ny, guests had a chance to offer thei r congratul a- tions and best wishes to the newly sworn - in a m- bassador. I took the opportunity to present A m- bassador Pyatt and his wife Mary with A Candle in Remembrance , published by the UNWLA, and a copy of the issue of Our Life , dedicated to the 70th annive rsary of the 1932 - 33 Holodomor. I also shared with them a bit of UNWLA history and its many projects. The Ambassador and his family left for Kyiv on August 2nd and seem to have quickly acclimated — just three weeks later, he and his Kyiv staff sang a renditi on of the song “Chervona Ruta” on Ukraine’s Independence Day. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr8i3jzo5fk ) Best of wishes, Ambassador Pyatt ! Lidia Bilous, UNWLA Vice - President of Public Relations, and I also marked Ukraine’s I n- dependence Day, but we did so with Soyuz Ukrainok of the L’viv region on Sunday, August 25th; however, many important events and mee t- ings preceded this celebratory get - together. Shor t ly after our arrival in Ukraine, we were most fortunate to be able to participate in the consecr a- tion of the Ukrainian Catholic Patriarchal Cath e- dral in Kyiv on August 18th. The blessing of the Cathedral wa s performed by Patriarch Sviatos lav, together with members of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Roman Catholic Bishops and the Apostolic Nuncio of Ukraine , and coincided with the 1025 th annive r- sary of the C hristening of Kyivan Ru s’. Major Archbishop Emeritus Lubomyr Husar and Partriarch Sviatoslav echoed the same message in their homilies over August 17th and 18th — and that was that this “new home of God” would be a house of unity for “all of His children .” The theme of unity was t o be emphasized repeate dly during the weekend. At the c elebra tory b anquet following the Mass, we had the opportunity to speak with Rev . Bishops Borys Gudziak and Paul Chomnycky and the Roman Catholic Archbishop and Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, among others. As we thanked Cardinal Dolan for his support of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and its Patriarch, the Cardinal reconfirmed his strong admiration for and commitment to our young Patriarch . During the banquet, the Patriarch proved to be a true man of the people: he personally thanked each individual attendee by making the rounds to every table. The Academia held at the National Palace of Art “Ukraina” presented the painful and bitte r- sweet history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in parallel to the his tory of Ukraine itself; it consis t- ed of simultaneous video and vocal presentations and produced many a teary eye. This series of events, attended by thousands of faithful from around the world, was indeed historical and very spiritual. I and Lidia Bilous, who represented the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organ i- zations (WFUWO) for this occasion, were ho n- ored to participate in it. During the next few days we attended the annual meeting of the WFUWO and the 10th World Congress of Ukrainians. Both even ts were held at the L’viv Polytechnic University — on A u- gust 18 - 19 and on August 20 - 22 respectively . The UNWLA presented its annual report to WFUWO meeting attendees; a detailed account of our o r- ganization’s activities for the past five years also appeared i n print in the UWC Congress book. Newly elected WFUWO President Orysia Sushko shared her vision for the diaspora organization with WFUWO participants; a report on WFUWO participation in the United Nations’ programs was given by WFUWO main representative Dr . Marta Kichorowska Kebalo; Dr. Mart h a Bohachevsk y - Chomiak spoke on the UNWLA Women’s Studies
