30 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2013 IN MEMORIAM Stephanie Wochok 1917 – 2013 Stephanie Wochok (né e Demianyk) passed away on Fe b- ruary 8, 2013 , at the age of 95. She was a lo ngtime Soyuzianka , since 1937, and will be greatly missed by all who knew he r. In a d- dition to her involv e- ment in the UNWLA, Stephanie was also active in many other organizations, both Ukrainian and America n, throughout her entire life. Born on a family farm in Charlestown Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on May 5, 1917, Mrs. Wochok attended schools there and in Philadelphia , where her family later moved. She graduated from Philadelphia Girls High an d attended Temple University’s Evening Program. She married Frank Wochok on April 22, 1939, and they were married for more than 53 years. The couple had four son s. During her early years, Mrs. Wochok worked for the City of Philadelphia in City’s Wage Tax D epartment in a supervisory capacity. Then in 1951, at the request of Ukrainian Catholic Bishop Constantine Bohachevsky, Mrs. Wochok came to work for the Providence Associ a- tion for Ukrainian Catholics in America, a frate r- nal organization that provided many benefits to its members. Using her language skills, Mrs. Wochok helped Ukrainian Displace d Persons who were held in camps during World War II to imm i- grate to the United States, and often provided them with room and board in her home until they could move elsewhere. In 1953 Mrs. Wochok was elected treasu r- er of the Providence Association where she served until her retirement in 1986. In addition, she was president of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress (1965) and the New Jersey Fraternal Congress (1973 - 74). In the late 1930s, she joined the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America where her mother, grandmother and aunt were members for many years in Branch 42. Mrs. Wochok was a lif e- long charter member of Branch 52, where she served as president from 19 64 to 2001. She also served as president of the Philadelphia Federation of Women’s Clubs and allied organizations in 1972 - 74 and 1986 - 88 , where she disseminated information about Ukrainian culture. This Fede r- ation served more than 100 women’s clubs. In 199 9, Mrs. Wochok was elected P resident of the UNWLA Philadelphia Regional Council and served in this capacity until 2002. She organized several noteworthy programs. One significant event was a panel discussion of women’s issues and the raising of children, e ntitl ed “Ukrainian Women in Kaleidoscope.” Mrs. Wochok was instrumental in the founding of the Ukrainian Congr ess Committee of America, Inc. i n the 1940s and a member of the Ukrainian American Relief Committee, Inc. , which sent various supplies to Ukraini ans in the German and Austrian post - war camps. She was also involved in many activities and organizations associated with the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Philadelphia. Some of the awards Mrs. Wochok received were the John Jordan Upchurch Award from the Pennsylvania Congress (1980), the Layperson of the Year from the League of Ukrainian Catholics of America (1982), Certificate of Merit for helping humanity from the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in Philadelphia, Certificate from the Red Cross, and the prestigious “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” award from Pope John Paul II during his visit to the Ukrainian Cathedral of the Immaculate Co n- ception in 1982. The Ukrainian Catholic Ch urch also recognized her lifetime services to the church with an award for her years of devotion. Mrs. Wochok was also active in local pol i- tics as the judge of elections. As a representative of the Republican Party, she was a poll watcher from the 1940s t o the 1980s. Stefanie Wochok is survived by her son Taras, his wife Judith, her son Thomas, his wife Elizabeth, and son Dennis and wife Eleanor as well as seven grandchildren.
