As always, it is constructive to summari ze in a thank - you email, follow up, persist , and stay i n- volved. There are some “don’ts” that can detract f rom moving forward . Conversations with “My child says you said...” may put the teacher on the defensive, and s/he may focus on why your child is mistaken instead of an action plan. It often isn’t useful to bring up other children’s grades or what they say, a s a teacher should not discuss other children. Unless there is an obvious grading error, it may be more productive to focus on improving grades in the future rather than insisting on a grade change on a previous assessment. The fo r- mer implies a confidence in the student’s ability to improve; the latter may suggest to the student that they need or can rely on a parent’s interve n- tion to get better grades . If these steps don’t help, a parent can e s- calate the matter to higher admini strators. This can be done , but with caution, as this may cause an irreversible rift with the teacher for the rest of the year. It is almost expected that sometime in a student’s academic career she will encounter a teacher or a subject that does not match a st u- dent’s skills or needs. Perhaps the most valuable lesson for a child would be to acquire resilience by learning how to navigate through these challenges successfully, with parents’ support and encou r- agement.
