32 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2009 ANNOUNCING __________________ ___________________________ __________________ THE NEW UNWLA WEB SITE New content, new format, new look www.unwla.org Welcome. Explore. Bookmark . New from Yara From March 27 to April 12, 2009, members of Yara Arts Group and a troupe of visiting artists from Kyrgyzstan will be performing an experimental theater piece based on an ancient Kyrgyz epic. Er Toshtuk , the story of a warrior who falls into underworld and battles giants, monsters, and a killer kettle while searching for his soul, combines traditional and contemporary elements. Magical and humorous, Er Toshtuk is a fantastic voyage into the past that provides a glimpse of a rich and intr iguing culture the West knows little about. It is a feast for the eyes and ears, an intricate blend of joyful songs and sorrowful laments (in Kyrgyz and in English), a set design that incorporates shadow puppets, and costumes embellished with traditional K yrgyz embroidery. Yara's director, Virlana Tkacz, notes, "I believe that my experience growing up speaking Ukrainian has made me sensitive to the intricacies of other cultures. I am fascinated with the past and traditional source materials. The art lies in how you present these — so that your audience will find them as enchanting." Ms. Tkacz, who is UNWLA Member - at - Large and a member of Our Life ’s editorial board, created the theatre piece with Kenzhegul Satybaldieva and the Kyrgyz artists last spring while on a Fulbright Senion Scholar Fellowship in Bishkek. Er Toshtuk will be playing at La MaMa Exprimental Theatre in New York . Performances are Thursday - Saturday 8 PM or Sunday matinee. For more information, call (212) 475 - 7710 or visit www.lamama.org. DEAR EDITOR I had to write because I really connected with your article “A Voice from the Choir.” It struck a chord, and I began to reminisce about my own experiences growing up in the hromada. What a gift these dedicated folks gave us. Like you, I remem bered how demanding these teachers were, but I realize and treasure how much they gave us. They (and the music they passed on to us) live forever in our hearts and memories.
