“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2009 29 An Interview w ith Ilona Sochynsky The cover for the October - November 2008 issue of Our Life featured a painting by Ilona Sochynsky. In this issue, we are sharing with readers some information about the artist, her work, her professional achieve - ments, and her insights on her craft as an artist. Ms. Sochynsky is a member of UNWLA Branch 113. Ilona Sochynsky is a prolific fine artist, graphic designer, and educator. A graduate of the Rhode Island Scho ol of Design and Yale University School of Art, Sochynsky has been exhibiting her works in a multi pli - city of media since the early 1980s in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Washing ton, D.C., Maryland, and Rhode Island. She owned a design fir m specializing in corporate communications and has taught as an adjunct professor at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and Atlantic Cape Com munity College. Her work is held in many private collections as well as the permanent collections of The Zimme rli Art Museum in New Jersey, The Ukrainian Museum In NYC, and The Noyes Museum of Art in New Jersey. She has recently been inducted into Who’s Who in American Art. Ms. Sochynsky is also known for her Jersey Shore print series that were shown at Dante Hall Theater of the Arts reception gallery in the summer of 2006. These graphic color prints highlight popular South Jersey resort landmarks and Boardwalk icons from a whimsical perspective. Ms. Sochynsky has also been commissioned to create the impressive 46 by 22 foot work of art entitled The Fishing Pier . This mural, located on Arctic and Mississippi Avenues, pays tribute to Atlantic City’s Italian Community. Sochynsky’s most recent com - mission was for Bally’s Atlantic City High Limit Gaming Room for which s he produced three large - scale paintings. The Noyes Museum of Art, located In Oceanville, New Jersey, featured Ilona Sochynsky’s paintings in a one - person exhibit from October 14 through November 30, 2008. Titled Abstract Intrigue, the exhibit featured over 26 oil paintings on canvas in varying levels of abstraction and was the artist’s first solo show at the Noyes Museum. As one reviewer noted , “Sochynsky’s abstract paintings combine surrealism with intense colors in striking shapes that move the viewer acr oss the canvas. A strong compositional tension creates the sense of push and pull where images dance, collide, overshadow and float. She displays a clear love of composition, design and balance in her work, creating abstract illusions where images offer br ief glimpses of reality. She reconstructs images by breaking down components and rebuilding them into one collage - like surface. Recognizable forms, human or otherwise, motivate the viewer to see something familiar, but the true meaning of each image remain s unknown.” Ms. Sochynsky discussed her evolution as an artist in a recent email interview with OL’s editor, providing some fascinating information about her life and work as an artist. When/how did you first become interested in art? My interest and en gagement in art started at a very young age. My mother enrolled me in a children's art class at The Brooklyn Museum. I also received a lot of encouragement from my art teacher, Mrs. Salie, at The Berkeley Institute during my high school years. Which other artists' work (contemporary or otherwise) do you like and value? I admire any number of artists at any given time and for different reasons. Howard Hodgkins, comes to mind. Others are Brancusi, Giacometti, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Francis Bacon, Rene Magrit te, Fra Angelico. Ilona Sochynsky Photo by John Di Maio
