M A R T A B A C Z Y N S K A IVAN MARCHUK’S ART EXHIBITION AT THE UKRAINIAN MUSUEM Іван Марчук. "Зимова дорога". 1988 p., полотно, темпера 60*80 см Ivan Marchuk. ‘‘Winter Path", 1988. Tem pera on canvas. An exhibition of the paintings of Ivan Marchuk, one of the most important members of the non-conformist art movement in Ukraine in the 1960’s — ’80’s, as well as one of the best known and original artists in Ukraine today, will be shown at the Ukrainian Museum in New York City beginning Saturday, December 16, 1989 through January 14, 1990. The exhibition will feature a number of works created by Marchuk in the past, as well as a group of paintings executed within the past year. The artist will be present at the opening of the exhibition. Marchuk is a remarkable artist with a unique sense of style and a definite point of view and philosophy in his work. With twenty solo exhibitions to his name and extensive coverage in the press, he nevertheless had no official status as an artist in the Soviet Union until a year ago because he was not a member of the Artist’s Union. “Before Perestroika, work such as mine was not consi dered to butress the State. For this reason, my work was deemed subversive at best, insane at worst,” says the artist. Marchuk’s paintings project surrealistic visions in cluding figure depictions, flowers, landscapes and ab stract compositions. A quality of doom and despair permeates his work. The artist is greatly concerned with the fate of mankind, as the multitudes in his renditions march to their destruction and annihilation. Ivan Marchuk was born in 1936 in the village of Moskalivka in Western Ukraine. His family background allowed him to develop in an environment of strong Ukrainian folk art traditions. He studied at the Trush Art School in Lviv and after a three year army stint in Mol davia, continued his studies at the Lviv Institute of Іван Марчук. "Земля поснула". 1968 p., папір, перо, туш.
