П. Маріс Ґолдсміт Дансарт— референтка Міжнародніх справ і миру. Mrs. Maryse Goldsmith Dansaert, International Relations and Peace Convener. appearance onstage of the singer Ulyana Kot, created a dramatic finale. Dressed in the authentic folk costume of her native Volhynia, she performed songs from the wellspring of her ancient culture, passed down from her mother and grandmother, rather than a conservatory- trained repertoire. The resulting panorama demonstrated the continuity of the Ukrainian nation and its heritage from the prehistoric era to the present. Among those present were leaders of virtually all worldwide women’s organizations, all of whom Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak formally introduced. To name a few: former ICW president Sukcha Hong of Korea; newly elected ICW president Lily Boykens from Bel gium; president of the National Council of women, USA, Merrinelle Sulivan; honorary president of the ICW Dame Miriam Dell of New Zealand; former ICW president Mary Shuler; ICW/NCW liaison for the Centennial Celebration Alicia Paolozzi; Nancy Barker, head of the American committee; former head of the US NCW Betty Saltzman and many other prominent women. The Ukrainian reception hosted by the UNWLA was part of a diverse centennial program which the ICW celebrated both in Washington, DC and in New York, where it was hosted by U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar and Mayor Edward Koch. After the opening ceremony in Washington’s Ken nedy Center, various activities began: in the daytime, plenary sessions and committee meetings were held while in the evenings there were receptions and other events. For instance, Secretary of State George Schultz hosted a reception in the State Department; the National Women’s Party, founded in 1913 by Alice Paul, also hosted a reception. The sessions dealt with a variety of concerns in an effort to alleviate existing poverty, ignor ance, illness, social inequity and other problems. An important issue was the inclusion of larger numbers of women in the political process and decision-making of policies on the civic, national and international level. As well, a resolution was passed condemn ing the racist policy of apartheid in South Africa, and human rights violations in general in a call to govern ments to support “effective measures against all forms of apartheid or racism, wherever they may appear.” Part of the resolution reads as follows: The Committee on International Relations and Peace of the International Council of Women meeting on the occasion of its centenary, wants to renew its opposition to all violations of human rights and human dignity, be it apartheid or other forms of deprivation of liberty and justice. It calls upon its member councils to urge their govern ments to reaffirm their support of those policies of the United Nations that were introduced to imple ment more effective means of opposition to all forms of apartheid everywhere in the world. An interesting part of the program was the religious service, which called for unity and equally represented faiths of the world such as: Hinduism, Judaism, Bud dhism, Christianity, Islam and Bahai. At the end of each prayer, the head of every delegation^aid “Go in peace” in her own language. Although Ukrainian women have participated in councils and conventions since 1904, when Ukrainian Ukrainian women from around the world with the granddaugh ter of Lady Aberdeen - Lady Jessaymyne Harmsworth from Great Britain.
