OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women s League of America VOL. XLV OCTOBER — 1988 Editor: Marta Baczynsky UNWLA PARTICIPATES IN CELEBRATING THE CENTENNIAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S COUNCIL In conjunction with the Centennial Celebration of the International Women’s Council, the UNWLA sponsored a reception in the National Press Club in Washington, DC on July 2, 1988. The invited guests numbered over 400 and included representatives of over 70 nations, among them France, Fiji, Korea, Jamaica, Malta, Nigeria, Australia. Since Soviet Ukraine is not a member of the ICW, this recep tion provided a unique opportunity for these interna tional delegates to become acquainted with Ukrainian history and culture. After greeting the guests, Maria Savchak, UNWLA president, stated that the UNWLA had been a member of the ICW until the 1920’s; presently it is active through the U.S. National Council of Women. In addition to providing informative brochures and an opportunity for individual interaction at the recep tion, the UNWLA also arranged an impressive display of historical national costumes encompassing many ter ritories of Ukraine and dating back to the second century B.C. A spontaneous event, originally unscheduled, served to enrich the program as well as provide a direct link with Ukraine. This was the performance of Ulyana Kot, a folksinger from Soviet Ukraine who happened to be in Washington for the International Folk Festival held annually by the Smithsonian Institute. She was brought to the reception and asked to sing a few songs. This coincidence resulted in a unique and unprecedented spectacle. The display of Ukrainian historical costumes by live models in the imposing setting of the Press Club, with the yellow and blue Ukrainian national colors hanging on the wall created a strong impression of the beauty and majesty of Ukraine’s traditions. Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak, vice president of both the UNWLA and the U.S. National Women’s Coun cil, provided historical commentary to supplement the visual recreation of Rus’ Ukraine, as well as pertinent information about contemporary affairs in Ukraine. Fol lowing this stunning and variegated formal display of costumes from different areas and eras of Ukraine, the Президент МРЖ Лілі Бойкенс з головою СУА Марією Савчак і Марією Душник. ICW President Lily Boeykens with UNWLA President Maria Savchak and Mary Dushnyk. Д-р Ванда Ляховєц, скарбник МРЖ і п. Ляховєц, між ними Марта Хомяк.
