UKRAINIAN WOMEN ACTIVE IN REPUBLICAN CLUB On March 29 a Women’s Divi sion of the Ukrainian Republican Club of Philadelphia was found ed. It is headed by Mrs. Kather ine Halamar. Other officers are: Mrs. Maria Mak- simiuk, rec. secretary Mrs. Olga Scaffidi, corr. secretary, Mrs. Maria Mazur, treasurer. The board of directors is com prised of Mesdames: Helen Lo- tocky (long-time President of the UNWLA), Daria Zawado- wych, Irene Ilnycky, Lidia Ode- zynsky and Katherine Zin. All the above-named ladies are well- known in the professional, orga nizational, cultural and sports life of the Ukrainian community. The executive board of the Divi sion meets monthly in the UN WLA Home. PLAN PROGRAM WITH APPEAL At an Organizational Confer ence, held on June 4 in Detroit, Mich., a panel discussion on or ganizational work was held. Mrs. A. Volker, UNWLA Vice Presi dent, was one of the panelists. Her suggestions for a more in teresting program are summar ized below. The SUA program radiates from three sources: a) Head quarters ; b) Regional Council; c) Chapters. The program is the life line of the organization. It must be worked around the purpose of the organization: its goals and the goals which the members in dividually want to attain. The program must be flexible and based on a survey of the needs of the members. The exec utive of the organization must strive for excellence and quality rather than quantity in pro grams and make sure that the program is planned not for the members but by the members. There must be a master plan for the organization’s program, and this should be set up for the whole year in advance so that the members know month by month what to expect and what to look forward to. There should be no “one-man- show” program. This can be done by tapping the talents of the or ganization’s members rather than by reaching out for out siders. The program should be planned for each individual member’s growth: for his development, for fellowship, and for pleasure. A program should be planned in such a way that an air of co operation, of sharing prevails. Unless a member is gaining something from the Club’s pro gram she is not going to be very enthusiastic about coming, even if she does join the group. Up to the last convention of SUA we had no standing pro gram committee however, this does not mean that we had no program planning. Therefore, with the committee now created the program should radiate from the Headquarters. This program should encompass the “theme” which the convention adopted for the next three years, the projects which were adopted in the form of resolutions, and so on. To summarize: A program with appeal must be planned . . . it cannot be expected to just “happen.” It must incorporate the purpose and goals of the or ganization. It must offer mem bers an opportunity for growth and development for leadership; it must be flexible to meet the needs of the group and it must be interesting and stimulating enough to attract new members. PRESIDENT’S TOUR On Sept. 10 Mrs. Stefanie Pushkar, UNWLA President, be gan a tour of our Branches in the Western states. Her first stop was Phoenix, Arizona (Sept. 11-12), Los Angeles (Sept. 13-16), San Francisco (Sept. 16-22), Minneapolis (Sept. 22-25) and Chicago (Sept. 25-Oct. 2). The tour gave her the opportunity to meet far situated Branches, which are not in close ties with the Board. This is the first tour ever undertaken by an UNWLA President in this area.
