were played softly in the back ground, Mrs. Demray discussed the h i storical development of ca rols, the origin of U krainian Christm as carols, and the role they play in our Ukrainian com m unities’ Christm as celebra tions. As Christians everywhere ex press th eir love through gifts to those in need, our members knit ted four woolen afghans for hos pitals. Mrs. Nicholas Stechison, Chairm an of the A fghan Com m ittee, Mrs. W alter Strokon, Chapter President, Mrs. Paul Hugel, and Mrs. Violet Kloss presented three of them to the Northville State Hospital’s G eriatric Division. The fourth afghan was given to a chapter member, Mrs. Nicholas Nebozen- ko who has been hospitalized in D etroit for some tim e. And to the chapter’s oldest member, Mrs. Anna Lucky who has been unable to attend m ost of the m eetings, was given a subscrip tion to “Our Life.” Chapter 37 received a C hrist mas g ift from one of its mem bers on December 12th. Miss Ol ga Shuster invited the members and friends to her new home for a program called “Christm as around the W orld” given by Miss L aura Clarke. Miss Clarke’s pro gram was very unusual. She showed colored slides of tableaux of nationality dolls depicting Christm as customs in their lands. Accompanying each tab leaux were slides of Christm as cards and words of carols from the given country. The audience sang the carols as the words ap peared on the screen. L ater members and guests helped to pack Christm as bas kets for the needy w ith canned foods and clothing they brought from home. Before Christm as Mrs. W alter Strokon delivered some baskets to a m otherless U krainian fam ily and one to a lonely m other of one of our de ceased members. Two good talkers . . . not w orth one good listener. Chinese Proverb LECTURE ON UKRAINE On December 12, 1963 Mrs. A nastasia Volker, our Public Re lations Chairm an had a m eeting with the Coalition’s Women’s Group in Detroit, Mich. Her lec ture comprised nationality group a ttitu d e ; and the threatening of Communist infiltration here, be cause of our complacency. The lecture was well received and vi vidly discussed. Mrs. Volker was accompanied by Mrs. Valentine Saw chuk D.D.S. from 63 UN WLA Branch. PAGEANT OF PEACE A t the International N ight of the annual Pageant of Peace Na tional Christm as Program in W ashington, D. C., the U krain ians were represented by Miss M artha Procinsky and Darian Diachok. Dressed in native Uk rainian costumes, the couple per form ed the lively U krainian dance, “kolomeyka,” and were enthusiastically received by the audience. The program was held at the Lisner Auditorium, W ash ington, D. C. on December 26. Miss M artha Procinsky is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W alter Procinsky, and Darian Diachok is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Theo dosius Diachok. Both m others are active as officers in the new ly organized Branch 78 of the U krainian National Women’s League of America, Inc. PRICE $1.00 Order at UNWLA H eadquarters MEETING WITH REGIONAL COUNCIL UNWLA Regional Council in Chicago, 111., invited Mrs. Anas tasia Volker, our Vice-President and Public Relations Chairman to their m eeting and banquet, held on December 7, 1963. About 40 members were present from all chapters. Mrs. Lydia Bala- ban, the new Regional Chairman presided. Mrs. Volker spoke about internal-external Public Relations. There was a good dis cussion and question period. Be sides th a t Mrs. Volker visited the exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, which UNWLA Chapter 22 has been in charge of for a num ber of years. CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Miss Joanna Draginda gave a program of Ukrainian Christm as traditions for Zonta Internation al at the Sheritan Cadillac in Detroit, Mich., which brought fine commentaries. She also perform ed for the American Academy of folklore in D etroit, Mich., at its annual convention. This is p art of the Regional Council Public Relations work where Joanne Draginda is our newly elected cultural director. UKRAINIAN BEAUTY CONTEST The Ukrainian-C a n a d і a n Weekly “New Pathw ay,” pub lished in Toronto launched a beauty contest in 1963. The 17 contestants were sponsored by Ukrainian organizations. One among them represented The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America. She was Miss Yaroslava Slyvka of New York City. The contest climaxed in a Ball given in honor of these U krain ian beauties, held on October 12, 1963 in Toronto. Thirteen of the 17 contestants chosen from com munities all over Canada, togeth er w ith one from New York City appeared in their m ost beautiful form.
