Forty Years A g o The name of Olga Basarab is very popular among Ukrainian women. Many branches of wom en’s and youth’s organizations have chosen her as their patron. H er life became the subject of a play and poets have dedicated th eir poems to her. W hy so much honor to a woman who was nei th er an a rtist nor a social lead er? It was the strength of her character th a t won Olga Basa rab her fame. She was an aver age Ukrainian girl, born in a middle class family. On complet ing a good education she entered professional life. Being an Uk rainian patriot, her social work started early, first in youth or ganizations and later on in char ity work. She was m arried in World W ar I and very soon her husband was killed. Under this blow she intensified her social work and dedicated herself to care for wounded soldiers. These ties influenced her outlook on political m atters. Soon she joined th e ranks of a secret U krainian M ilitary Organization, which had as its object the free dom of Ukraine. W hen arrested, in February 1924, a t Lviw she was only a small unim portant element in this organization. Nevertheless she bore herself valiantly and did not disclose any entrusted data or secret inform ation. She died in prison, th e night of Feb ru ary 13-14 as a result of the terrible to rtu re adm inistered. The news of her death spread im m ediately through Ukraine. From this tim e on the name of Olga Basarab became a sym- Tbol. She was admired for the stability of her convictions and dedication. Although her achievements in social work were im portant, it was her somber death which disclosed her value. She did not aspire to leadership nor domination. H er ideal was the perfect fulfillm ent of even the smallest obligation towards her community. During the ensuing years m any U krainian girls followed her example. Among them were brilliant women who assumed im portant positions in the Uk rainian underground movement. To name only the poetess Olena Teliha, who was killed by Gesta po in Kiev or the w riter Ludmy- la S tarytska - Cherniakhivska Evaluation of our Public Re lations program at the Septem ber Annual m eeting of the Board of the UNWL resulted in the fol lowing directives: 1 — H eretofore adopted plans and proposals expressed in the resolutions w ith regard to Pub lic Relations are to be continued and are valid. 2 — New proposals and re-af firm ations: In all contacts with the American community we are not only ambassadors of good will, but simply, factually and emphatically inform the public as to who we are, w hat we are, and w hat we stand for in the free world. 3 — A uthenticity should be the key to all exhibits of folk arts, traditional foods, folk cos tumes, etc. Seek the experts in your community for help be they members of SUA or not. Do it rig h t or not at all. 4 — N arrators, commentators who was m urdered by NKVD. Undimmed by tim e the name of Olga Basarab p ersisted: the faithfulness of an unknown fighter a perpetual challenge to all. It happened forty years ago. U krainian women in the Free World, ever mindful, celebrate this anniversary in memorial gatherings. And the modest grave of Olga Basarab in Lviv is always cared for and adorned by nameless adm irers from the very day of her heroic achieve m ent until now. speakers on U krainian culture, history, folk arts, current poli tical issues, etc., should be well versed and knowledgeable in their field. Shortage of trained people is acute, there fore the proposed pilot project by New York City Chapter 72 to conduct a workshop on public relations training is a welcomed event. 5 — All expositions, displays, contacts w ith the Federation of Women’s Clubs, PTA, Interna tional Institute, YWCA, League of Women Voters, Business and Professional women’s groups, Church groups, Civic Clubs, Po litical Clubs, and so on lead to invitations and program s for these groups and fu rth er partici pation. Sift your contacts and if possible choose and pursue those th a t will be of greatest value to our organization. These contacts will vary from locality to local ity.
