On the occasion of E aster H oli day the U N W LA Branches are a r ranging bazaars w hich have won wide popularity. T he event p re pared by U'NW LA B ranch 28 of N ew ark, N. J., m ay serve as a mo- 'rI 'О J° anssi ip J 4 : UI 'PP is presented a detailed description how this is being- done. H ere let us just m ention th at the Section of Social W ork of the Branch has been w orking for several m onths to get affair ready. The B azaar contains around 1,000 articles of diverse values. The B ranch obtains them through donations or voluntary w ork of its m em bers. These are various item s of necessaries of life as well as E aster eggs and E aster br ead and cakes. The sale, is conducted on one Siindav before E aster and it is usually com pleted in this one day. A bazaar of another kind is be ing prepared by the U N W LA Branch 24 of Elizabeth, N. J. The m em bers of this B ranch are bak UKRAINIAN ARTIST OLENA KULCHITSKA IS 80 Olena K ulchitska, th e prom i nent a rtist painter, who is now residing in Lviv, W est U kraine, has reached her 80th year. She is well know n throughout U kraine. A fter com pleting the Academ y of A rts in Vienna, she devoted her life and w ork to U krainian art, and today she may be proud of her achievem ents. H er talent was m anifested in m any directions. She liked to in close her w ork into cycles, and hence she produced (paintings of one subject in various distinc tions. She proved a talented illus tra to r of books, particularly of books for children. ,She displayed considerable attention to U krain ian folk art. Along w ith her sister Olga, who w as her artistic advis er, she had been collecting and studying for long tim e U krainian native costum es. As a result she completed an album containing close to 200 types of native cos tum es. The favor ite branch of her w ork ing and selling E aster bread and cakes. The U krainian “babka” and cheese cake won th ere deserved distinction, so th a t E lizabethans are eager to buy them . A t the same tim e there is an occasion to dem onstrate U krainian E aster eggs designed by local U krainian ladies. The idea of arranging such b a zaars is spreading. L ast year the D istrict Council of U N W LA at Rochester, N. Y., conducted a si m ilar bazaar selling em broideries and E aster eggs. The Branch 57 of Utica, N. Y., has been arran g ing such bazaars for several years. The E aster eggs and sm all cera mic articles the m em bers of the Branch are offering for sale, have already become popular in tow n. Thus th e E aster B azaars are grow ing to be a precious branch of activity of our m em bers. T hrough such enterprise they de m onstrate their skill to organize and have things done, as well as the artistic taste of the arranging group. was engraving. She has been p e r fect in this technique and has p ro duced num erous illustrations, draw ings, even portraits. Ow ing to this w ork she has gained great popularity and her illustrations have adorned m any U krainian publications. H er other favorite technique has been painting in w ater colors. She has evolved m any landscapes resplendent w ith sunshine and colors done in aqua relle. In 1955 there was published in Kiev an album of these aqua relles dedicated to h er sister. The artistic editions in U SSR have m arked the anniversary of 80th birthday of Olena R ulchit- ska. T he periodical “Z hovten” (O ctober) carried a lengthy a r ticle on her artistic production. EASTER BREAD AND CAKES E aster bread and cakes has been traditional in U kraine. The U k rainian home keeper has been paying particular attention to this rarity since it is of unique signi ficance not only, but it also re veals her advanced state of e x pertness. In the middle of these sw eet E aster delicacies is “paska” or “babka.” This is a round bread of the best dough. “P ask a” has ornam entations on top m ade of the same dough, while “babka” is uniform only its top being cover ed w ith icing. The g reatest m astery in m aking “paska” or “babka” is attribu ted to the quality of dough. This m as te ry has been through the years achieved by U krainian ham e- keepers. The fertile U krainian soil yielded ideal grain w hich like wise conduced to -elaborate ’bak ing of E aster bread and cakes. The follow ing recipe for E aster cheese cake is from the cook-book by Savela ,Stechishin: E aster Sym yk 1 lb . d ry c o tta g e ch esse 4 e g g y o lk s 1 w h o le e g g sa lt Press cottage cheese through a sieve. B eat the egg yolks and the whole egg to geth er until very light and cream y. Combine w ith the cheese and beat well. Season to taste w ith salt. Spoon the m ix ture into a w ell-buttered baking dish. Bake in slow oven (300-325° Fahrenheit), for about 45 m in utes, or until the m ixture does not adhere to the blade of a knife inserted in the center. Chill th o r oughly before serving.
