Our Life | Наше життя 13 The coronavirus pandemic has caused the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) to consider ways in which we can con- tinue our charitable work during this unprece- dented time. The pandemic has created hard- ships for millions of people around the world, including in the United States. Many people have lost their jobs and struggle to feed their families. Recalling Ukraine’s own history with hunger, the UNWLA National Board called upon its membership to participate in a nationwide action “Feeding the Hungry, UNWLA for USA.” UNWLA Branches, Regional Councils, in- dividual members, and community friends responded to the call, generously donating $21,410. The UNWLA National Executive Com- mittee provided an additional $10,000, select - ing Feeding America, the nation’s leading do- mestic hunger relief charity, as the recipient of these funds. Feeding America distributes food to millions of people annually via food pantries, soup kitchens, youth programs, sen- ior centers, and shelters. On July 16, the UNWLA’s total donation of $31,410 was sent to Feeding America. “We are both obligated and honored to help our neighbors, as the USA is our home, where we enjoy liberty and freedom and where no one should go hungry,” stated Marianna Zajac, UN- WLA President upon transferring the funds. In his acknowledgement letter, Casey March, Chief Development Officer for Feeding America, replied, “The results we’ve accomplished to- gether are extraordinary, but not just because of the numbers—it is in the physical and emo- tional relief each bag, box and bin provides. With these meals, we lay a foundation for hope.” The UNWLA is grateful to all who have re- sponded to this call, and grateful that through our “Feeding the Hungry, UNWLA for USA” ef- fort we have been able to help many who are in need. A list of donors to the Feeding the Hungry project will be listed in the October issue. FEEDING America Oka Hrycak Social Welfare National Standing Chair
