32 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2018 Shari ng Our Traditions by Marianna (Szczawinsky) Crans, Branch 95 In March of this year, UNWLA Branch 95 (Mid Hudson Valley Region, New York) was asked by a local l ibrary in Gardiner , New York, to put on a presentation on Ukrainian Easter t raditions , an in- vi tation we heartily accepted. Thinking in terms of exposing children to our culture, we approached it from that view point. So w e prepared displays on our culture, on p ysanky and embroidery, on the Easter t raditions and activities of Holy Week , and on the m eaning and significance of the Easter b as- ket foods. We had a movie on creating pysanky , and we had completed p ysank y in progress on dis- play as well as completed pysanky with t he wax re- moved to reveal the patterns. We had oval disks on which c hildren could try their own hand at draw- ing their own p ysank y to which we could add a magnet on the back for them to take home. We talked about our embroidered s orochky and vysh y vank y as our traditional “Sunday best” and explained how they were created . We even had em- br oidery bookmarks to show children how to do cross stitch ing . We also had a traditional Easter b asket with all the foods that would be blessed to break the Easter Fast and provided samples of paska and kobasa for visitors to try. For ambient background musi c, we played selections by Korinya, a talented and famous local Ukrainian family folk band. One unexpected surprise was that our event attracted more adults than children ; the gathering became a community outing for a fun Saturday afternoon of learning, s haring and expe- riencing a traditional Ukrainian Easter. After in- troductions and explanations about the back- ground and historical references for our Easter/Spring rituals, which included displays and posters and a movi e, people happily milled around , examin ing the displays and asking questions, watching the p ysanka demo, and sampling the food, and even tr ying some of the activities associ- ated with Ukrainian Easter traditions. A s the event ended, we presented the li- brary with a gift — a beautifully illustrated book on Ukrainian c ulture from Branch 95 to add to their collection with our thanks giving us the oppor- tunity to showcase our culture and traditions. We received many compliments and heartfelt thanks from our visitors as well as from the library staff for hosting an event that was a pleasant, educa- tional, and entertaining cultural neighborhood gathering . It was a wonderful way to spend an af- ternoon focusing on s pring and Easter activities while w inter’s last flurries swirled outside.
