“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2018 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 25 Life Lessons from and for Women by Orysia Nazar Zinycz While reading about the UNWLA sponsoring a conference at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) on ‘Empowering W omen in Conflict’ in August 2018, I recalled some Gifts of Wisdom passed on to me from a pampered wife and mother who was suddenly widowed during WWII and became the head of household with two children in a man’s world. That woman was my mother, and among the many important gifts she imparted to me was a lesson on how she dealt with “Life and Conflict.” Mama’s most important rules for survival were: 1. Set a goal for each day — even a small one — and complete it; it will automatically give you a sense of accom plishment. (Our US armed forces set “first thing in the morning, make your bed” as the first goal for each day). 2. Today is a new day. Consider at least three things you are grateful for. Doing this will set the tone for the rest of the day. These were also some life lessons I learned the hard way — by living. The last rule is especially important and is too often unheeded by women. 3. As women, we tend to think of how to help others, but, at the same time, fail to take self - credit for what we accomplishe d for others. Learn to be kind to yourself. At the end of each day remember at least three things you did well and repeat them to yourself at least 3 times. This too will boost your self - awareness and self - compassion and raise your confidence to greater ac hievements. 4. It is your one and only life — don’t let another person control your actions. Don’t let another’s opinion control your life. 5. Last but not least, learn a lesson from each day. Consider whether you could have done something bet- ter or differe ntly. This is not self - criticism; it’s merely a tool to make tomorrow or the next day easier. _______________________________________________________________________ Гість у нашім бюрі......
