32 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2013 YOUR HEALTH IN A CRYSTAL BALL by Ihor Magun, MD, FACP Predicting your possible medical future, as if seeing it in an imaginary crystal ball, may not be so far - fetched. These days we are armed with information about family history and disease screening tests. This provides us with the unique opportunity to initiate lifestyle changes years, if not decades, before actual problems surface. Al t- hough “you cannot change the genes you i nheri t- ed,” as the famous line goes, you can make chan g- es that may not only alter the course of a disease but even eliminate it altogether. With new health law regulations sche d- uled to take effect in the very near future, annual preventive care screenings will become standard, even without any out - of - pocket expenses. R e- quest and take advantage of these tests. Make certain you get screened for diseases that are prevalent in your family and screen for diabetes with a test referred to as “hemoglobin A1C.” This will evaluate your risk of getting diabetes. For individuals with elevated cholesterol levels, and especially from families with heart di s- ease, dietary interventions and medicinal a p- proaches are warranted at an earlier stage in life. Deposition of p laque narrows blood vessels and initiates the process of vascular disease. Although much has been spoken and wri t- ten about physical activity, most individuals lead sedentary lives. Do not follow that pattern. I n- corporate physical activity into your dail y ro u- tine. You will be surprised by how good it actually feels. If you remain physically active throughout your life, the benefits will last long into the future. Mental exercises and socially engaging activities (such as your membership in the UNWLA) p rovide the necessary means of keeping you sharp. Challenge yourself with mental activ i- ties and change simple things — for instance, try using the fork or the computer mouse with your left hand (or the right one if you are left - handed to begin with). Althou gh you may already know your fa m ily history of possible diseases, it may be be n- eficial to sit down and discuss more extended family, inquiring about issues that may have skipped a generation. Age - appropriate screenings such as c o- lonoscopies, eye examinati ons, mammograms, bone density studies as well as blood tests for ce r- tain known family diseases should be scheduled. Eliminate bad habits: if you smoke, stop; if your alcohol intake is excessive, cut down; and if your sleeping habits are bad, address them. Finally, catch up on suggested immuniz a- tions. Pertussis is making a comeback and a booster vaccine combined with tetanus and dip h- theria should be updated (Tdap). Annual influe n- za vaccine, pneumonia vaccine and the vaccine for herpes zoster (shingles) m ay be recommended as well. Look carefully into your imaginary crystal ball. Incorporate the suggestions that apply to you and just begin to enjoy the healthy future that you orchestrated for yourself. Here's to your good future health! __________________ ___________________ Told by his service that he had an emergency prescription to fill, the druggist hurried to his store in the middle of the night and found the stingiest man in town waiting out front. “My doctor says I should take this,” the man said as he handed a note to the druggist. “Ten cents worth of bicarbonate of soda? You woke me up for this when a glass of hot water would do about as much good?” “A glass of warm water?” said the customer, taking the note back from the druggist. “Thank you for the advice, and have a good night.” ВІДПОВІДІ НА ХРЕСТИКІВКУ Горизонтально: 1.
