“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 201 3 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 13 Branch Secretary Liliya Balkova with her mother - in - law Evdokiya Balkova . A FLOWER FOR MOTHE R: BRANCH 30 OF YONKERS, NY, CELEBRATES MOTHER'S DAY Mother’s Day dates back to early spring celebr a- tions in honor of Rhea, the mother of gods in ancient Greek mythology. In the United States, the first official Mother’s Day commemor a- tion was organized on May 10, 1908, by Anna Jarvis for her own mother, with the help of a Philadelp h ia merchant, John Wanamaker. During the cer e mony, Anna Jarvis di s- tributed 500 whi te carn a tions in honor of her mother. Flo w- ers are a sy m bol of love and appreciation, but the carn a- tion in particular has always stood for sweetness, lovel i ness, innocence, and pure love. The Greeks called it the “flower of the gods.” Following the initiat ive of Anna Jarvis, Mother’s Day celebrations sprang up in other m a- jor cities of the United States, and carnations were used during religious services. Eventually, on May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mot h- e r's Day. Since then, Mother’s Day has grown into a global event celebrated in many countries, i n- cluding Ukraine. As a branch of a women’s organization, it was only appropriate that UNWLA Branch 30, named in honor of Lidia Krushel - nycky , found a special way to commemorate Mother’s Day this year. As the branch does most of its work in Westche s- ter County, NY, member Iryna Hoshovsky proposed that we honor mothers of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yonkers, NY, with a flower. Our president, N a- dia Liteplo, promoted the idea amongst our members and arranged the purchase of carnations. On Sunday, May 5 th , 2013, immediately following the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. liturgies, members Nadia Liteplo, Marika Makarenko, Lilia Balkova, Nadia Spiak, Marika Zenecky , and Zhan - na Huralska positioned themselves at the exits of the church and gifted the mothers with a flower. Along with best wishes for an enjoyable day, an invitation was extended to join our branch, which is an active participant in community eve nts and is eager to attract and looks forward to greeting prospective members. Olia Rudyk Branch 30 Press Secretary ___________________________ BRANCH 30 CELEBRATES SUMMER AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE On June 26, 2013, members of UNWLA Branch 30 of Yonkers, NY, attended a social di n- ner to reminisce about past accomplishments and make plans for future events. The next meeting is scheduled for September when ever y- one will r e turn, ready for another e x- citing and productive year. Come and join us in the fall!
