UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2013 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ОКРУГ І ВІДДІЛІВ СУА PHILADEL PHIA REGIONAL COUNCIL C ELEBRATES I TS 75 th JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY by Petrusia Sawchak During the anniversary celebration at the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center in Jenkintown, PA The Philadelphia Regional Council marked its 75 th anniversary on June 9, 2013, at the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center (UECC) in Jenkintown, PA, with a gala celebr a- tion, exhibit, and roundtable discussion. It was a time for the Soyuzianky to reflect on the past achievements of the Council’s memb ers, honor their present accomplishments, and look to the future of their organization. More than 160 participants came to honor the Philadelphia Regional Council of the UNWLA, which was formed in 1938 by a group of very pa t- riotic women, some born in Amer ica and some newly immigrated to this great country in the 1930s or even earlier. These early pioneers, ded i- cated to their Ukrainian roots, gave birth to the UNWLA , which has now grown to exponential numbers. The opening ceremonies began at noon in the Al exander Chernyk Gallery of the UECC with welcome from Iryna Buczkowski, P resident of the Philadelphia Regional Council , and greetings from Halia Keller. Also introduced was Oxana Farion, who was instrumental in the planning and execution of the event. Dist inguished guests from the UNWLA National Boar d were Marianna Zajac, P resident, Ulana Zinych, 1 st Vice - P re - sident, Sophia Hewryk, 3 rd V ice - P resident, and Vera Kushnir , Member - at - L arge. A roundtable seminar conducted by five speakers discussed the t opic “Se venty - five years — what follows , ” with Olenka Karpinich (Br. 88) as moderator. The first speaker was Anna Maksymowych , Branch 43, who spoke of the early years of the UNWLA . She spoke about the love of the Ukrain i- an home , including all things Ukrainian like la n- guage, traditions, song, tales and folk arts, co m- munity, and the fatherland. “Pride and respect for yourself, your chi l- dren, and the entire Hromada are paramount,” said Ms. Maksymowych. She also said that Soyuzianky are committed to all aspects of Ukr ainian life , including conduc ting svitlychky , teaching Ukrainian Studies, working in our libra r- ies, and maintain ing organizations involved with children. She also highlighted the UNWLA ’s h u- m anitarian and social services that provide aid to Ukrainian studen ts (Children - Student Sponso r- ship Programs) and orphans, as well as the disa d- vantaged in Brazil, Poland, and Ukraine. The second speaker, Daria Lissy, Branch 54, spoke ab out her early involvement in the UNWLA, beginning after educational pursuits
