Project Easter Egg! Folk a r t fo r som e is a strictly p riv ate in tere st th a t is handed down from fam ily to fam ily w ith little or no outside exposure. Such is definitely no t th e case fo r E laine K eryluk A u stin of Seattle, an ex-airline stew ardess and school teach er tu rn ed house wife, who has prom oted h er U krainian cultural h eritag e into a full-tim e hobby and successful fund ra isin g venture. Seeking assistance in an initial program to g en erate in te re st in th e in tricately colored U krainian E a ste r egg, E laine soon sparked th e in te re st of h er local so rority alum nae group, A lpha X i D elta. The ran g e and depth of p ro jects accom plished by th is group in th e tw o years since E laine firs t got th em s ta rte d on U krainian a r t is rem arkable and serves as an excellent exam ple of w h at sim ilar groups can do w ith such h as been found of helping those in g re a te st need. The sp iritu al leader of U krainians in Y ugosla via, H is Excellency H avryil Bu- katko, issued an appeal fo r help to U krainians everyw here. In it he indicated th e form s th is help can tak e — m oney, food, used clothing, or m edicine can be sen t w ith in th e n ex t few m onths d uty free. All help will be deeply ap preciated. Our old proverb sta te s th a t he who gives in tim e doubles his g ift. L et us th en rem em ber th a t th e g re a te st need is now, d urin g th e w in ter m onths. O ur A m er ican com m unity has proven r e peatedly th a t it un d erstan ds th e needs of others. The U krainian N ational W om en’s L eague w as one of th e firs t organizations th a t established th e m achinery fo r collecting and forw arding help. The n ex t step is up to th e individual B ranches. L et us prove once m ore th a t we ap pre ciate th e stru g g le of our b re th ren to rem ain U krainians am ong o th er n ationalites. L et us prove to th em once again th a t th e y are a p a rt of a g re a t nation. L et us help th em now, w hen help is so desparately needed. a p rog ram in o th er p a rts of th e country. Initially th e 20-m em ber alum nae group approached th e U krainian E a ste r egg a r t form as an excellent m eans fo r raisin g m oney to support local youth- oriented charities. W ith th e as sistance of several of th e h u s bands, and especially E lain e’s husband Jack A ustin, th e group prepared a num ber of egg dy e ing k its to be sold to individuals and groups in th e g re a te r S eattle area. T his activ ity called fo r m em bers of th e group, and inci dentally th e ir fam ilies, to become proficient in th e fine and deli cate a r t of dying eggs U krainian style. The k it th a t w as designed and p u t to g eth er by S eattle E a st Group A lpha Xi D eltas consists of a detailed in stru ctio n kit, wax, dyes, a specially designed stylus, sam ples of finished eggs in a v ariety of styles and designs, and historical background on th e U kraine and th e E a ste r egg cus tom . The k its are sold fo r $2.50. M arketing th is product has been a m ajo r u n d ertak in g fo r Elaine and her group. C reating in te re st in th e p ro ject has been dependent on th e cooperation of th e local new spaper and broad cast m edia, as well as various large w om en’s organizations who have an in te re st in such activity. Several of th e S eattle daily new s papers have tak en an in te re st in th e project, and so fa r articles have appeared w ith color pic tu res in th e W om en’s P ages and R otogravure. K ing B roadcasting Company, th e local NBC a ffili ate, p u t to g eth er a color fe a tu re sto ry on th e E a ste r egg activity. D isplays have been p repared for p resen tatio n by th e A lpha Xi D elta group a t w om en’s clubs, conventions, a rt fairs, and o th er app rop riate places. A slide show fe a tu rin g U krainian a rt on p o t te ry sam ples, inlaid wood, em broidery and egg designs has been developed by th e group, and a th ree-m in u te color film w as produced by KIN G TV from th e film ing session of th e egg dye ing show. W eekly new spapers in th e S eattle area have also been in terested in fe a tu rin g th e groups’ v entu re into U krainian a rt and have been helpful in building in te re st in th e egg dye ing kits.
