Mrs. Oresta Karalash, President of 58 UNWLA Branch in Detroit, Mich. THE PRESIDENT OF UNWLA BRANCH 58 Mrs. Oresta Karalash, a na tive of Canada, was born in To ronto, where she attended both English and U krain i an schools. Her grandparents em igrated to welfare training and also could join such groups as the Ameri can Women’s Voluntary Services or others to prepare themselves ; — eventually establish an old folks’ home; — get offices or a building in New York C ity ; — increase our public rela tions possibilities, to make the work and objectives of U krain ian women better known; — combat Russification th ru a central plan to be executed by the regional councils in the branches, and correct m isinfor m ation about U kraine in the press, textbooks, etc. (this would require qualified help) ; — increase our educational program and scholarships not only to our own members but to women in general, which m ight lead to our obtaining govern m ent grants if we adm inistered th e program s scccessfully; — build a youth movement among older girls and young women to groom them for future leadership in the UNW LA; — when more young women come in, inaugurate sports pro gram s, w ith competition in ten nis, bowling, swimming, volley ball, etc. Canada from Lobyanka, in the region of Zbarazh, W estern Uk raine. The parents of Mrs. K ara lash were raised in Canada. Ev eryone in Toronto knows the Wo- loshyns. Mr. Roman Woloshyn works for the Ukrainian N ation al Organization (UNO), and Mrs. Woloshyn is an active member of the Ukrainian Women’s Or ganization of Canada. Oresta Woloshyn completed Dominion Business College, and while in school belonged to the Ukrainian Youth Association (MUN), where she served as secretary of the Executive Board. She also belonged to the Ukrainian Dance Ensemble in Toronto. . The m arriage of Oresta Woloshyn and Donald Karalash took place on Septem ber 15, 1956. The young couple settled in Detroit, where Mrs. K aralash joined UNWLA Branch 58. Her special interest was Ukrainian Once a broad-scale program is form ulated, a system could be devised for raising the necessary funds through a branch quota system, based on num ber of members, etc. Also, the UNWLA should receive a tax-exem pt sta tus which could be effective in every state where it has a branch. In conclusion, the future of the UNWLA depends on each and every one of us and on our determ ination to help our orga nization m eet Its prim ary objec tives. We m ust forge closer links among the central office, the re gional councils and the branches and not work at cross purposes, but in unison w ith the overall policies and objectives of the UNWLA. It is w ith this resoluteness th a t we should approach the 40th anniversary of the UN WLA. In strengthening its or ganizational structure and in cultivating a unifying relation ship, we will be able to become a vital and decisive force in the Ukrainian and American com munities. Mary Dushnyck, Organ i zation Chairman embroidery, and she soon got the other Branch members interest ed in this fascinating hobby. W ith the assistance of her m oth er-in-law, Mrs. K aralash demon strated the basic techniques to the members, and soon each woman had a beautifully embroi dered blouse of her own making. Mrs. Oresta K aralash has quickly won for herself the ad m iration and acclaim of all mem bers of Branch 58. Although she is the busy m other of three chil dren, she always manages to find tim e for Branch affairs and eagerly tackles new undertak ings. A report of Branch 58 activ ities in the past year is presented separately in this issue. REPORT OF UNWLA BRANCH 58 In December 1964 the new of ficers of our Branch were elect ed. The new president is O resta K aralash ; vice-president M ary H radovsky; corr. secretary Nell Sosnovsky, rec. secretary Olga Solovey; treasurer Nell M arty n ; historian Helen Sedorak. On December 18 a group of our members sang Ukrainian Christm as carols at the Lincoln Park Women’s Club in conjunc tion w ith Mrs. A nastasia Vol- ker’s presentation of “C hrist mas in the Ukraine.” Plans were made to sta rt a li brary for the use of our mem bers. One of the books purchased this year was the “Cookie Cook book,” published by the Lincoln Park Women’s Club. A t the F ebruary meeting, plans were made for a m ag i c show to be held in March. Also button covers were passed out to members for embroidery. These covers would be used at the UNWLA 40th Anniversary Banquet. Our group embroider ed 70 button covers, w ith Mrs. Joan Gardy and Mrs. Nell M ar tyn doing the greatest num ber of them . Most of our members attended the Banquet celebrating the 40th anniversary of UNWLA held at the Pick F ort Shelly Hotel.
