COSTUMES TO INSPIRE DESIGNERS For the firist ’liune, the costumes represent in g 12 provinces of Uk raine, i,n full-col or photographs will be available for research to the world's top notch fashion de signers who use the well-known Library o-f Cosltume Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Cul'turail Committee of the Ukrainian Youth's League of North America has ■comipleted an ambitious project of compiling and making a portfolio of these color photos, accompanied by a detailed article on the Ukrainian costumes by Mrs. Lydia Rudyk- Buracliynsska. (This article, along with color photos will be includ ed in the forthcoming book on “Ukrainian Arts,” also compiled bv the U.Y.L.-N.A.). The source of the photographs, which were ‘taken by Harry Kasha, was th/-* Ukrainian Peasant Fashion Show directed by Dr. E. Wach-ma, which was presented during the UYL- NA’s 13th Annual Convention last September. The portfolio itself is hand somely bound in hand-made paper which suggests a Ukrainian de sign. Fashion experts and students from all over the world make use of the materials in this library, and its books have been the source of many modern fashion trends. Perhaps soon we may be seeing featured in sonne 5th Aveuue shop or top-flight fashion magazine, a contemporary adaptation of the TTutzul “kiptar” or a Kievskv “zhupan ” If Americanism means a love for our traditions and ideals, it is not incompatible wit'h an appre- ciation of what is admirable in the civilization of other countries. Subscribe to “Our Life” TO PROMOTE BETTER UNDERSTANDING Maybe the immigration laws should be liberalized to establish equality of admission on the basis of qualification rather than quota. As we work with .people of oth er countries, let’s not a-sisume that the way we are doing things to day is necessarily the best way for everybody. Maybe we can learn and develop, too.
