Ukrainian Easter Eggs - American Style By Ann Pyndyk The Ukrainian custom of ex changing Easter Eggs is in deed something to be proud of, and the ingenious method of putting such beauty on one little egg is amazing. How nice it is to have your Easter basket decorated with pysankas when you take it to be ble.ss.ed. As you exchange the pysankas with one another as a token of good will, the signific ance becomes greater when you can beam with pride and say, “I made them,” for the egg carries considerable proof of the effort expended upon it and, therefore, makes a cherished gift.. purchased at any druggist. Do not use candle wax as you can not see the outlines plainly. Beeswax is dark, making sharp outlines. 4. Stylus. — To make one* se cure”" a piece of fine thin stock metal. The thinner, the better as it is more flexible. Ask your4 men folk to get* some for you. Cut off a small ‘triangular piece about y2” and form into cone as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Most of the time the stylus will write as is, but a fine needle can be inserted through the point to assure writing. Use a. flat piece of wood about 3/8” wide and So that you too can learn this wonderful art, I would like to pass on what has been compiled by me from years of practice. I av & s determined to i-earn even though I could find no one to teach me. My thanks to a friend, also a beginner like me at that time, who found out the method of the multi-color effect and passed it on to me. After that, I tried all sorts of experiments. My parents were very tolerant and helped in every way pos sible. They even developed a strong allergy to hard boiled eggs, as accidents will happen, you know. Patience and determination are the first Stools” needted^ Once you have started, you will un derstand why* Equipment needed 1. Fresh white eggs. 2. Candle — to be used for heating stylus (kistka). 3. Beeswax. — This can be about 5 or 6” long. Slit one end down center. Open slit end care fully and insert metal cone (Fig. 3). The point that protrudes over top is folded over handle to one side and fastened securely with fine wire. Before fastening, test stylus to see if wax flows freely and writing is smooth. On a new stylus, a chip of wax can be in serted in top opening and heated over flame. This permits an easi er flow of wax. It is a good idea to make several with dicerent openings—heavy, medium and fine lines. The heavy is used 'for filling in larger spaces. 5. Dyes. — Purchase good powder dyes. These can be pur chased at a Ukrainian Bazaar. D.oD not u,se pill-type dyes as they are made for use with hot water for best results, and this is impossible when wax is used. (Dyes can be freshened up by adding a small amount of boil ing water once they have been setting fof a few days). 6. Eggholder — for immersing and removing eggs from dyes. The wire-type that conies with pill dyes is good, or old spoons can be used. 7. Tray — to keep all equip ment on. Everything can be moved easily out of the way when not in use. found the following solution. For beginners 1 suggest boiled eggs/ Boil eggs in a clean pot free from grea-se. When done, wipe dry and cool. (All utensils lindi jars should be free from grease before us:n^ Use- a. de tergent for washing them). Make a very weak solution of yellow 8. Jars.—Use wide-mouth pint jars or old discarded cups. Other materials needed: Have several pieces of cloth — one for each color used. Cleansing tissues.- Clear •nail polish. Ener- gine cleaning fluid. Preparing Dyes Place one, teaspoon of dye in pint jar. Fill 3/4 full with boil ing water. Be sure to have knife 1 or spoon in jar to prevent crack ing when water is poured. Add one teaspoon vinegar. This helps to get the color. Mix dyes, so that they are thoroughly dis solved. Less dye can be used if lighter color is desired. For be ginners I suggest using yellow, red and blue dyes. Let dyes cool before immersing eggs, as hot water will melt wax design and ruin ^dyes. Preparing Eggs Select fresh white eggs. This is where I have experienced greatest difficulty in that dyes do not adhere to egg in spots, whether boiled in plain water, or in water with a dash of baking soda, and a lot of other things. As many as a dozen eggs have been nse'd and only three took dye. Eggs were even selected di rectly from chicken coops of various farmers. The greatest amount of work is in the design, therefore, discouragement and disappointment are great when dye does npt adhere. Here’s where I started experiments and * s dye in a small cup. This called “ Testing Dye.” Dip egg into dye for a few seconds and wipe dry. If egg has no noticeable white spots, the egg is O.K. Remove dye with a^piece of cotton dipped in a solution of warm water and baking soda. Wipe dry. Test se veral at. one time so that you can have them on hand. Eggs are now ready for the design. Use designs which you have in your collection. Start with those that “look easy.” Use a geomet ric design, one as illustrated, which can. be divided into equal parts with straight lines. This design has many variations and it’s fun to add your own. Light your candle and уоіГге •all set to begin. Hold egg par tially wrapped in cleansing tis sue. It will seem awkward at first, but try not to hold egg with bare hands as 6ils in the skin adhere to egg and dye will not take; which cannot be blam ed on the egg. Hold stylus over •candile flame. Touch beeswax with hot tip. Test first line on paper or fingernail as first touch might become a blotch. Reheat point and start outline on egg. Point must be reheated •every- time it stops writing. Writing wjll seem hard at first. Lines will not go- in the di rection intended, but, givetfl time you too will master it. Just'keep at it. Hope you like boiled eggs as many will find their way down your stomach. Anyway, you can eat while you work. Пишуть писанки у Клізденді: Катерина Кантор, Анна Пиндик Софія Сіхда, Олена Нагірняк
