30 OUR LIFE • July-August 2023 Branch 96: An Update on Activities With the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the UNWLA issued a request to support Ukraine in the form of humani - tarian aid. Branch 96 respond - ed by pivoting from literary and social events to political events and fundraisers for Ukraine. Branch 96 archivist Marie Zary - cky and other Branch members participated in various political events held to support Ukraine. She addressed the audience during the Ukrainian Flag Rais - ing event at Warren City Hall in March 2022 and at the 98th Holodomor Commemoration at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in November. Branch members Oksanna Gudz, Olga Kraska, Nadia Lypetzky Purnell, Mary Stecko, and Luba Szajenko have worked steadily at the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic School’s Free Store for Ukrainian refugees since its opening in July 2022. Former Branch presidents Mar - ta Kwitkowsky and Catherine Kizyma have provided assistance to Samaritas as translators and facilitators in the organization’s work with Ukrainian refugees. Branch 96 held three fundraisers in 2022 – the annual Bake Sale in June to cover scholarships, plus two events with proceeds designated for humanitarian aid to Ukraine: a Silent Art Auction in October and a Silent Jewelry Lada Pelensky Prokop and Lydia Taraschuk, Branch 96, Warren, MI Auction in December. In addition, Branch 96 was heavily involved in two Detroit Regional Council fundraisers: the Pasta Dinner in April and the Pyrohy Dinner at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in June. Several members also helped by collecting donations and passing out small Ukrainian flags during two summer events at the Novi Expo Center, with proceeds added to the Regional Council fund for aid to Ukraine. The Bake Sale was held one weekend at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church following all Masses. Baked goods were donated by Branch mem - bers. Marta Kwitkowsky created artistic posters to publicize the event. The Art Auction Committee consisted of Marijka Kalba, Catherine Kizy - ma, Nadia Lypetzky Purnell, and Lydia Taraschuk. The sale was held at the Ukrainian Cultural Center, with paintings donated by Branch 96 members. Again, Marta Kwitkowsky skillfully produced beautiful bid - ding sheets. Years ago, Branch 96 had purchased coaster sets of orig - inal artwork from the renowned Ukrainian artist Edward (EKO) Kozak. In 2022 the Branch obtained written permission from Edward Kozak’s copyright holder and Branch 96 member Chrystyna Kozak to use the artwork for Branch fundraising. Last year Catherine Kizyma had the coasters laminated and then arranged them in sets of four. They were sold not only at Branch 96 and Regional Council fundraisers, but also during the Christmas Bazaar at the Ukrainian American Archives & Mu - seum in Hamtramck, MI. The Jewelry Sale Committee was chaired by Oksanna Gudz, with Nadia Lypetzky Purnell and Lydia Taraschuk helping to price and organize the items and Marta Kwitkowsky in charge of the bidding sheets. A Holi - day Jewelry Silent Auction and Sale was held, with jewelry donated by Ann Hnatiuk from the estate of Maria Bilyk-Zarins. The jewelry was at - tractively showcased against white tablecloths on several tables in the Detroit Regional Council Domivka, where we hold our meetings and many of our activities. Bidding lists for buyers were provided for each Branch 96 members at the Domivka.
