28 OUR LIFE • July-August 2023 Branch 118 Co-Sponsors Easter Bazaar The 45th annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar fundraiser co-sponsored by UNWLA Branch 118 of Hou - ston and the Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church on April 2 proved to be an extraordinary event! Delicious Ukrainian food, pasky, and pastries, prepared by pa - rishioners of Pokrova, sold rap - idly to the throng of attendees that numbered in the hundreds. Over 100 pasky for this event were baked by Evgenia Bala - ban and Maria Zhuk. Martha Noukas served as both Bazaar Chair and Vendor Coordinator. Halyna Seniw oversaw the pack - aging and sale of pastries with the help of Olga Hirka, Nadia Bu - chai, and Christine Puzyk. Nadija Sulyukmanov purchased kitch - en and bar supplies and made sure refreshment sales went smoothly. Our newest Branch 118 members, Sonia Laurenzi, her daughter Maria, and Natal - ka Senkiv, worked hard serving lunch plates in the service line, alongside Sharon Nishtick and Christine Van Horn. Ukrainian folk tunes, performed by Alex Shumsky and his band, filled the air as visitors shopped the numerous craft booths in the Pokrova Parish Hall. Every year, people come to shop for Martha Noukas , Treasurer, Branch 118, Houston, TX unique Easter gifts and Ukrain - ian crafts, such as pysanky by Dottie Williams, gerdany by Slava Detsyk, and embroideries by Justyna Uschak. Adding to that list, shoppers this year en - joyed vendors selling Petrykivka paintings, wooden pysanka pla- ques by Olha Seniw, micro-em - broidered necklaces by Uliana Ivankiv, leather handbags, deli - cious chocolates, silver jewelry, home decor items, hand-made brooches, wooden religious crafts from Jerusalem, and Ukraine flags and T-shirts. Beautiful vinky (wreaths), em - broidered ornaments, floral door wreaths, colorful quilts, and Ukrainian gnomes were sold at the Pokrova gift shop by Nicole Dijak and Christine Mycio Spring. In addition to recruiting new members and selling raffle tick - ets for five incredible gift bas - kets from the Branch 118 craft booth, Branch members sold hand-crafted Easter eggs, glass ornaments donated by Mariola Klis, embroidered artwork, py - sanka supplies, and Branch 118 cookbooks. These sales were handled by Shanya Gensior, Christine Villacorta, Juliana Vil - lacorta, and Tamara Golovko. Shortly after the national an - thems were sung, greetings and opening remarks were given by Father Mykola Dovzhuk, Congress- man Al Green, Consul General of Ukraine in Houston Vitaliy Tarasiuk, and Branch 118 president Juliana Villacorta. Members of Branch 118. Father Mykola Dovzhuk, pastor of Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church; Al Green, Member of Congress; Vitaliy Tarasiuk, Con - sul General of Ukraine in Hou - ston; and Branch 118 president Juliana Villacorta. Congressman Green made a surprise visit to the bazaar and bestowed Cer - tificates of Special Congression - al Recognition to both Father Dovzhuk and Branch 118 for ser - vice to the Houston community. Bazaar shoppers enjoyed lunch under the tents that were set up on the front lawn of the Pokrova Parish Hall. A bouncy castle do - nated by Iryna Petrovska Marchi - ano was a huge hit with the nu - merous children in attendance. Before opening the doors to the general public at noon, Branch 118 members gathered for a quick group photo, primarily to show off the new UNWLA T-shirts that had been made for this spe - cial event, as well as the new UNWLA tablecloth for the booth. Entrance fees for the Bazaar (managed by Irene Kuchta and her crew of assistants: Andrew Kuchta, Olesh Bryndzia, and Dan Horodecky) were designat - ed for the UNWLA’s assistance with the war effort in Ukraine, as were the proceeds from the raffle. Our thanks to all who at - tended!
