18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2010 to not only play the violin, but also to feel the music and pa ssion that the beautiful instrument produces. With this in mind, the elder Mr. Dudko considered sending his young son to spend time with a gyps y who co uld instill into him the musical passion that only a gy psy can express. The young violinist ex - plaine d that his mother and grandmother found such an ide a ridiculous, concerned that there were other face ts of gypsy culture that a young boy mig ht be expos ed to; with that, further discussion of gypsies was d ropped. But after watching and listening to Mr. D udko performing Czardas by Vitt orio Monti, my hus band and I were not completely convinced that mother and grandmother had gotten their way! Rea lizi ng his own passion for the violin, Mr. D udko applied to the Mykola Lysenko Kyiv Speci alized Secondary Music School, which he atte nded for eleven years. Here, he continued honing his pla ying skills while learning about the history of the vi olin and abou t all aspects of music. Expanding on thei r formal studies, he and his roommates spent their free time furthering their range of music to incl ude pop, rock, and country. In the dormitory, they l istened to Elton John, Chicago, and Fleetwood Mac. After comple ting s econdary school, Mr. Dudko en rolled at the acclaimed Kyiv National Music al Academy of Ukraine where he studied for five ye ars. After graduating from the academy, he acce pted a position as a violinist with the Kyiv Opera Theatre Orchestra. Shortly the reaf ter, he parti cipated in a musical competition, winning a spot w ith the Cairo Symphonic Orchestra in Egypt. Given the economic instability in Ukraine, securing this position meant greater financial security. His sala ry with the Cairo Symphonic Orchestra was t en time s that earned by musicians in Ukraine, enabling him to provide for his family. The position also provide d numerous opportunities to play for audie nces around the world, and Mr. Dudko per - form ed in Poland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Ital y, T urkey , Iran, and South Korea. Returning to Ukra ine in 2004, he joined the Kyiv Symphony Orche stra where he met, fell in love with, and marr ied accomplished cellist Luba Holovata. Ms. H olovata, a native of Lviv, was born on Dece mber 23, 1975. Orphaned at t he age of five, Ms. H olovata and her four siblings were raised by an aun t and uncle. She revealed a love for the cello at an early age and applied for financial assistance with the local branch of the Ukrainian National Women’ s League. Ms. Holovata fondly reme mbers an in terview with Luba Bilowchtchuk, Chairwoman of the UNWLA’s Student Scholarship Program. Recogni zing the young girl’s talent and potential, Ms. B ilowchtchuk quickly awarded Ms. Holovata a schola rship that enabled her to attend the Solomyia Kru shel nytska Lviv Specialized Secondary Music School . Upon graduation, Ms. Holovata continued her st udies at the Lviv State Academy of Music. Havi ng completed her formal education, Ms. Holova ta launched her career as a cellist with the Lviv O pera Theatre Orc hestr a. For her first pro - fess ional stage performance with the orchestra, the UNWL A presented her with a brand new, hand - craf ted instrument. The cellist recalls that day with deep e motion, appreciation, and gratitude. Ms. Holova ta later joined the Lviv Sym phony O rchestra and e ventually the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra where she me t her future husband and began her travels thro ughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. Mr. D udko, his new bride Luba and two fell ow musicians, Serhyij Soloshchenko (second violi n) and Dmytro Panc henko (viola), formed the Prem ier String Quartet . Like his friend Mr. Dudko, Serhyi j Soloshchenko attended the Mykola Lysenko Kyiv S pecialized Secondary Music School for eleve n years and the Kyiv National Musical Acad - emy. His accomplishments include p erfo rming with the Ky iv Philharmonic Orchestra as well as with The L yatoshynskyj Classical Music Ensemble. Dmyt ro Panchenko, completed his formal education at th e Lviv State Academy of Music and joined vari ous musical groups which included a private sympho ny orc hestra and an international youth symphony orchestra. Both Mr. Soloshchenko and Mr. P anchenko have also traveled extensively as perfo rmers with their respective musical groups. The Pr emier String Quartet rece ived its first contr act on a cruise liner about f ive years ago. Since then t hese talented Ukrainians have worked for such cruis e lines as Princess and Celebrity, sharing their passi on for music with thousands of passengers aroun d the world while traveling to places most peopl e can only dream about visit ing one day. They love wh at they do but it is no secret that life as a music ian is a difficult one, and more so in an econom ically troubled country such as Ukraine. Thei r biggest dream is to save enough money t o buy a home and settle down to raise a fami ly in Ukraine. In the meantime, they are encha nting thousands of travelers every day. Stefan and I are grateful that we were among them. The aut hor is a member of UNWLA Branch 30. Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
