“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2010 17 An Oc ean of Music by Ol ia Rudyk Seate d: Stefan Rudyk. Standing (left to right): Luba Holovata, Olia Rudyk, Dmy tro Panchenko, Valentyn Dudko, Serhyij Soloshchenko. Sta nding in the open three - sto ry atrium of the c ruise ship The G rand Princess this past Dec ember, I heard the familiar sounds of Shchedr yk by Uk rainian composer Mykola Leontovych floating thr ough the air. Leaning over the railing to find the sour ce of the music and see who was playing this wor ld renowned melody, I discovered a string qu art et enchanting a large appreciative audience. It was not only the music that was familiar — so w ere the f aces, all of which had something distinctly Sla vic in their features. The woman with long blond hai r, who was lovingly embracing the cello , had to be U kra inian! So did the three men with her — the young man playing the first violin, the second viol inist, and the one playing the viola, all dis - playi ng feats of skill well above the average, all daz zling the crowd with technical accomplishments and obvious pa ssi on for their instruments. The expre ssion on my husband Stefan’s face showed that he ha d similar thoughts running through his head. Happy to hear a familiar Ukrainian melody, we w ere especially pleased to hear the first violinist expl ain to the audience tha t the artists in the Pre mier Stri ng Quartet wer e from Ukraine and enjoyed sha ring their love of music. The Quart et had a large rep ertoire spanning everything from traditional cla ssical masterpieces by the world’s greatest comp osers to familiar operatic ari as, Beatles tunes, cont emporary pop hits, Broadway show tunes, and, of c ourse, beautiful Ukrainian compositions. In t he course of our three - wee k cruise we wou ld hear Shchedr yk as pa rt of the Christmas them ed music. The Buk ovynsky Kozachok had the predom ina tely non - Ukr ainian audience tapping their fee t, clapping their hands, and moving in many dire ctions to this lively tune. The beautiful Mel odiya by My roslav Skoryk had the opposite effect, tra nsporting the audience into a deeply pensive mood. The quartet perf ormed several times a day, and their performance schedule was always on our dai ly agenda. There were, besides the daily eclectic rep ertoire, two formal concerts on the main stage of the c ruise ship, both ending with standing ovations from an appreciat ive a udience. Val entyn Dudko, the first violinist of the Pre mier String Quartet , was born on New Year’s Day , 1974 in Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukr aine. Mr. Dudko credits his father for introduc - ing hi m to the violin and sending him off for his fir st les sons at the age of six. His father wanted Val entyn
