On a l ighter note, we would like to congratulate Vera Farmiga, recipient of the UNWLA’s Young Women Achiev ers A ward in 2005, on her Golden Globe and Oscar Award nominations for Best Female Actr ess in a supporting role in the movie Up in the Air . We w ere all very touched when Vera attended our convent ion in 2005 with her beloved grandmother. We are proud of you , Ver a, as a person and as an actress, and w ish you the best of luck! In the United States, March is officially designated as Women' s History Month. Each year, related acti vities and events highlight women’s contributions to events in history and to conte mpor ary society. As in past ye ars, we once a gain encourage our branches to celebrate this month in their respective communities. Our we bsite is vibrant and dynamic and can be useful as a communication tool within our orga nization or beyond. Besides offeri ng curr ent information about our organization and our membership, the UNWL A website has become a contact source — ofte n for personal reasons — for U krainian women in this coun try and others interested in getting information about Ukraine. In the past few month s, fo r example, we have b een contacted (either by phone or e - mail ) by women originally from Ukraine who now find themselves in abus ive relationships in the United States and who need advice and/or assistance; by young students from Ukra ine studying in U.S. univer sities and wanting to hear a friendly voice; by Peace Corps volunteers or their fami lies trying to understand the living and working conditions in Ukraine; by American community groups looking for information, etc. Webmaster Zoriana Haftkowycz and I invite you to contribute to YOUR website. Ther e have been changes in the UNWLA office. Mrs. Natalia Duma, who has worked with much dedica tion for the UNWLA for over 30 years, has retired. We express our deepest gratitude to Mrs. Duma for her ma ny years of serv ice — she knew and understood our membership so well! Best wishes and good health, Pani Natalko, in your retirement! Our new office administrator is Olha Stasiuk. Ms. Stasiuk comes to us with much community work - based experience. She is experienced in data base maintenance and other useful software packages and is in the proc ess of transferring membership information into one single multi - use da tabase for overall better mana gement. Together with Pani Olya, we will be updating our office computer platform to be tter serve our memb ership and Our Li fe subscr ibers. May s he rest in peace! We al so extend our most sinc ere condolences to the family of Roman Kupchinsky , son of the la te Maria Sawchak, UNWLA President (1987 – 1993). Mr . Kupch i nsky, who was a passi onate supporter of the Ukrainian cause, an anal yst with the Jamestown Foundation , and form er head of the Ukrainian Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, passed away on Janua ry 19.
