LXVI I MAR CH 2010 SHARING THOUGHTS, VIEWS, & NEWS The will of the peo ple of Ukraine has been heard and will define its future. Ukraine’s second round of ele ctions took place on February 7 and Viktor Yanukovych won by a slim margin. According to the White Hous e Office of the Press Secretary, Pre sident Obama called Victor Yan ukovych on February 11 to congr atulate him on his election and wish him success in carrying out his mandate. The P resident commended the U krainian people on the conduct of their February 7 vote , and he and Viktor Yanukovych agreed on the imp ortance of cont inuing the cooperation on nuclear non - proli feration. The press release states that “The strategic partnership between the United States and Ukraine is base d on shared interests and values. The se include expanding democracy and prosperity, protecting s ecur ity and territorial integrity, strengthening the rule of law, promoting non - prol iferation, and supporting reform in Ukr aine’s economic and energy sectors. The U nited States looks forward to working with President - ele ct Yan ukovych and continuing to stre ngthe n our cooperation with Ukraine’s government and its Parliamentary lea ders.” As w ritten in various U.S and international newspaper editorials, the democratic freedoms sown by the O range Revolution are enjoyed and appreciated by the citizens of Ukraine and t hese freedoms will not be sac rificed and are expected to continue. An i nteresting analysis of the elections in Ukraine was offe red by Chr ystia Freeland, U.S. Managing Editor of the Financ ial Times , who said “The hope is that the strengthening democ rac y th at paradoxically brought him (Viktor Yanukovych) to the top will also force him to make good choic es.” The UNWLA’s new initiative “Assistance and Caring for the Elderly” in Ukraine is steadily moving for ward. The packages donated by Mission Outreach ha ve ar rived in Ukraine (the Christmas holidays delayed deli very by a month) and all will have been delivered to the ten nursing homes by the time this issue goes to prin t. Confirmations have started arriving and, most recently, a heartfelt thank you from th e Di rector of the Iva no - Fra nkivsk nursing home has been received. UNWLA Social Welfare Chairperson Iryna Rudyk and I have been receiving communications from our Regional Councils as they work out details and try to match the ne eds of their assigned nursing homes with their respective Regional Council’s particular resources and plan the next step. As we are aiming for transparency, Mrs. Rudyk is and will continue to communicate with the di rectors of the nursing homes as well as with our Soyuz Ukainok Ukrainy lia isons. The feedback from the comm unity has been very positive, and we encourage all interested parties to become involved. Contributions from the community are welcome and can be mailed to our New York City office. At t he UNWLA Executive Board meeting of J anuary 23, it was decided that our organization make a $1,000 d onation to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti through the American Red Cross. As we are Ame ricans and members of the world community, the Executive Board felt it appropriate that we sup por t the vict ims of the monumental tragedy in one of the poorest countries of the North American continent. During the m onth of January, the Ukrainian World Congress also sent its member organizations an appeal enco uraging just such an action. As f irst no ted in the January issue of Our L ife , the UNWLA will be among the organizations and ins titutions supporting the documentary “Life in the Dead Zone.” Since this decision was reached, Irene Zaby tko, the producer of this documentary, has been in contact with Lid a Czernyk. The former UNWLA Soc ial Welfare Chairperson served in this capacity for over 15 years and was instrumental in guiding the first ste ps of the UNWLA’s integral involvement in response to the Chornobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. Ms. Zaby tko will be i nterviewing Mrs. Czernyk for input into this very important documentary. The UNWLA is
