very special meaning because it was taking place in Ukraine, the birthplace of many WFUWO members and the homeland of their ancestors. She noted that 29 delegates from 16 countries were in attendance as well as 40 guests and observers. The delegates had come from as far as Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the United States of America, and Europe. Maria Szkambara then invited His Excellency Lubomyr Huzar, the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Catholic Church to bless the Congress and address those assembled. His Excellency spoke of the work that is before all of us. He said that mothers play a major role in raising children in the family, the smallest unit in our society where children are taught the values in life and what it means to be a good Christian, and that it is the family that raises children to be the future leaders of a nation. He noted, however, that the Ukrainian family is in desperate straits—families are divided because of the economic situation, mothers or fathers leave to find jobs in other parts of the world, and children often lack parental guidance. They leave the church and abandon the tenets of Christian upbringing and quickly assimilate in an environment that has many dangers and many temptations. Many become victims of trafficking and other misfortunes. His Excellency thanked women’s organizations for helping families in difficult situations, stressing that threats to the Ukrainian family were very serious and that we must do our best to help. His words saddened all of us but also served as an inspiration. Next on the agenda were official greetings to the Congress from a number of honored quests: the Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada, His Excellency Ihor Ostash; the president of the Ukrainian World Congress, Dr. Askold Lozynsky; Dr. Lilia Hryhorovych, president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine; Secretary General of UWC, Victor Pedenko; well-known publisher Osyp Zinkewych; and Olha Kobec, former president of the Olha Teliha Association. The president of the National Council of Women of Ukraine, Iryna Holubyeva, greeted the Congress on behalf of her organization and, on the following day, on behalf of Ukraine’s President Victor Yushchenko. The president of Soyuz Ukrainok from Poland, Kateryna Sirocka, read greetings from Atena Pashko who was unable to attend the Congress. Representatives of a number of other women’s organizations of Ukraine also greeted the Congress. Most told about how their organizations came into existence and the nature of their work. This segment of the proceedings was followed by the bestowing of Honorary WFUWO membership on presidents of member organizations and on very special women who had made significant contributions to the Ukrainian women’s movement. From the UNWLA, besides President Iryna Kurowyckyj, the following women were proclaimed Honorary Members of WFUWO: Dr. Joanna Ratych, Dr. Martha Bohachevska- Chomiak, and UN representative for WFUWO Nadia Shmigel. A reception for the delegates and guests followed. On August 16, Ms. Danyliak opened the session and proposed three candidates to co-chair the IX Congress: Christine Bidiak from Canada, Iryna Kurowyckyj from the United States of America, and Maria Kovalyshyn from Germany. The proposal was accepted unanimously. Christina Bidiak opened the session with a poem expressing love and loyalty to Ukraine. This was followed by greetings and reports from WFUWO’s President Maria Szkambara; in her short address, she spoke about success stories and problems that she encountered during her previous five-year term as pre sident, focusing especially on financial factors affecting the organization. Olha Danyliak, the organization’s treasurer, presented the official financial report. Iryna Kurowyckyj (speaking on behalf of Nadia Shmigel, who was unable to attend the proceedings) presented information about WFUWO’s work at the United Nations. She explained that at this time, the member States and the NGO’s at the UN are all focused on the UN Millennium Goals, which are to be fulfilled by the year 2015. These goals address the eight most crucial areas of concern for human life: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop global partnership and development. Anna Shypetyk, the vice president of WFUWO, reported abut the quarterly magazine Ukrainian Women in the World, spoke of the deficit of the magazine, and asked that all the organizations look for solutions to this important problem that everyone magazine encounters.
