FACIAL SKIN CARE FOR WINTER by Ihor M agun, M.D., F.A.C.P. Winter elements can have deleterious ef fects on your skin. Dry internal heat and lack of moisture can make skin dry and itchy. Proper winter skin care can make a tremendous in how you look and feel. With just minimal effort, your face can feel great and look younger. One of the basic prerequisites to good skin care is knowing your skin type. This will dictate the type of cleanser to select and where to use it. Many women have combination skin types (oily in some areas and dry in others), but skin type can be affected by seasonal changes, makeup application, improper use of soaps or excessive exfoliation, and other fac tors. Note, for example, that individuals with personal or family history of asthma, seasonal allergies or eczema are especially predisposed to dry skin. The face has more sebaceous (fatty) glands than the rest of the body. This fact alone should indicate that you need separate products for the face and body. Regular soap should never be used on the face. A superfattened soap with moisturizing in gredients such as cocoa butter or cold cream is recommended. Non-soap cleansers like Cetaphil (applied with a cotton ball) can be used as a makeup remover. Glycerin soaps should be avoided by most people, except for individuals with acne. New skin is replenished about every 3 to 4 weeks. The old, dead skin cells sit right on top of the new skin making skin look drab and tired. Removing the dead skin cells by exfoliation gives your face a youthful glowing appearance. The reason men tend to have more youthful looking skin is that they exfoliate regularly when they shave. Individuals with dry skin should exfoliate once or twice a week, while individuals with oily or combination skin should exfoliate about three to four times a week, after appropriate cleaning. Moisturizing the skin is a basic rule that is frequently not followed. Everyone benefits from moisturizing—even individuals with oily skin. These individuals should just use less. The best time to apply moisturizer is immediately after bathing. This traps the moisture from the water, which would otherwise evaporate and result in dry skin. There are basically two moisturizers. One type contain water in oil and is available in lotion form. Common products include Aquaphor and Eucerin. A more potent type of emollient is referred to as a humectant, which draws and holds water in the skin. AmLactin is an example. There are a plethora of skin products available, but it best to keep things simple and stick with a routine. Read labels and ingredients and remember that expensive skin products do not always give the best results. If you are interested in an expensive product, request samples before buying. Also remember that all skin is not created equal: What works for your friend or a family member, may not work for you. Let your own face be the judge of what works best. From the editor.
