During the recent elections, the Democratic Party won many seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate and now has a majority in both houses of Congress. As individuals who live in this country, our members supported and voted for candidates of their choice; as an organization, the UNWLA maintained a neutral stance as dictated by our by-laws. This, however, does not mean that the UNWLA should exist in a vacuum. Our organization was created in the United States of America, and our endeavors are often influenced by what occurs in this country’s political arena. Although we are an apolitical organization, our members have worked closely with government officials on issues that are important to Ukrainian Americans and to women, for example, the Jackson-Vanik Amendment and concerns about the trafficking of women. We will continue to work with legislators of both parties whose work supports our organization’s goals. Today we salute old friends who lost their bid for election or reelection and congratulate those candidates whose campaigns were successful. Below is a letter that UNWLA Vice President Marianna Zajac wrote to one of the victors. It is a letter that reflects our organization’s apolitical status while showing that our membership is interested in the work of the U.S. Government and recognizes the power of that government to support causes that are important to our community: The Honorable Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton United States Senate 476 Russell Senate Office Bldg. Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator Clinton: On behalf o f the Executive Board and the entire membership o f the Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America we are honored to offer you sincere congratulations on your re-election as U.S. Senator for the State o f New York. We are very well aware o f your support for the ongoing economic and social development o f Ukraine and o f your visits to Ukraine, most recently as part o f a Congressional delegation in February 2005. As we are sure you know, the UNWLA is a national organization founded in New York City in 1925 with branches across the country. It is the oldest Ukrainian women’s organization in the United States. The UNWLA promotes Ukrainian national identity and cultural heritage, provides financial assistance to Ukrainians within and outside the United States through humanitarian aid, and also forges alliances with Ukrainian, American and international organizations for charitable and educational purposes. At the “Vital Voices - Women in Democracy” conference held in Reykjavik in 1999, you, Senator Clinton, said, ‘And each o f you - is part o f a never-ending journey that women have taken to build for their societies and their families a better future . . . I t’s a journey that continues from generation to generation, passed on to us from mothers to daughters to granddaughters. ” As members o f the UNWLA, we have become an integral part o f that journey and join you in trying to better the lives o f our communities. Again, we congratulate you, compliment you on your commitment to your position and wish you continued success in your future endeavors. November 11, 2006 Sincerely, Iryna Kurowyckyj President Marianna Zajac VP, Public Relations Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
