OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LXIII DECEMBER 2006 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO God being born Who could know such wonder Jesus is His name, Mary is his mother The angels watch in awe and fear The ox stands trembling near the donkey grazing plaintively The shepherds kneel Seeing their God: He has come. He has come. From the Desk o f the President We are in the midst of winter, a season during which we celebrate many holy days: St. Nicholas Day, Christmas, New Year’s Day, the Epiphany. All these wonderful days have special traditions that have been passed down to us from our grandparents and parents; we, in turn, have passed them down to our children and grandchildren. It is a season of joy and spiritual warmth, a time of year that is much anticipated and celebrated with church services, caroling, delicious food, and the spirit of giving. On behalf of the Executive Committee and National Board, I wish all of you a joyous celebration. The year 2006 is coming to an end. Most of us will spend some time reflecting on the year that is ending, analyzing successes, failures, changes, and mentally summing up all of the things that have happened. In doing so, we will also make new plans for the upcoming year, hoping to avoid mistakes made in the past. This is a good way to end the year, not only for individuals but also for organizations. The next UNWLA Convention is one and half years away. At the last convention, we discussed what we must do to keep the UNWLA vibrant, viable, and versatile. Many of the ideas proposed focused on good and interesting programs, fundraisers for our projects, and most importantly, membership. At the convention, Branches, Regional Councils, and the National Board pledged to work to achieve the UNWLA’s goals. Since that time, the National Board and many UNWLA Branches have worked to live up to this pledge. For the organization to succeed, all of must continue to be vigilant. As the new year approaches, we must all renew our commitment to the resolutions made at the convention. Above all, we must remember that the UNWLA can prosper only if we have good leadership and good mentors who will teach and prepare others to become leaders and assume leadership positions in the Branches, Regional Councils, and National Board. We must continue to evaluate our activities, learn from our mistakes, and face new opportunities and challenges with courage and determination. We must also recognize that many of these challenges and opportunities are intertwined with the fate of the United States of America, its legislators, and its political realities.
