BIOFEEDBACK The Alternative Treatment Option by Ihor Magun, M.D., F.A.C.P. How would you like to use a noninvasive technique to manage a host of medical problems with no medications or complicated sophisticated devices? Your answer may logically be that there is no such thing available and if there is, it is most likely a gimmick. You may be surprised that there is, in fact, a technique that does all this. It is called Biofeedback and it is one of the most underutilized and least understood aspects of modem medicine. Biofeedback is a relatively new field. Origi nating in the late 1960s, it has become popular with patients seeking alternative forms of treatment and foregoing conventional treatments that don't work or produce undesirable side effects. Biofeedback is a technique that actually is so logical, it's amazing that its use is so limited. Its underlying premise is to teach patients to consciously change and control body functions that are normally unconscious, such as breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle tension. Many of your body's connections to the brain are complex and underutilized. By learning to use new connections and by actually visualizing how to achieve the desired response on a recording device, you gain control of the autonomic function of the brain. Once you are aware of what your body is doing, you can change the pattern by seeing what you need to do to reduce or eliminate a symptom. How does biofeedback work? Very simply. Sensors are placed on your skin and are used as measuring devices that gauge the state of your body. A monitor shows what is happening and also shows changes that occur when you make a conscious de cision to do something differently. It is not an active form of treatment, and nothing is being done to you during the hookup or after. Once the current state of your body is assessed, you use your own method of meditation, relaxation, or visualization to achieve the desired changes. In other words, the sensors and monitor will help you see what you need to do to make adjustments that will work for you. Biofeedback can be utilized to reduce the frequency and severity of muscle tension, migraine headaches, anxiety, panic attacks and neck and shoulder pain. As with any medical condition, proper evaluation by traditional medical techniques is paramount. Many conditions do require medica tions and other conventional therapies such as physical and occupational therapy, injections and the like. However, when conventional methods are not helpful, biofeedback is a useful alternative. Biofeedback monitors can measure tem perature of the skin, muscle tension, heart rate, and brain activity as well as electrical conductivity of the skin. Not all of these measurements are neces sary for all conditions. In fact, many types of bio feedback equipment are portable, inexpensive, and available for home use; a visit to a therapist or spe cialist is not always necessary. There is extensive support provided by the companies that manufacture and market the products. (These can be looked up on the Internet.) Biofeedback does require some effort. It is an acquired skill that takes some time to understand and perfect. It may, however, provide relief that tra ditional medicine sometimes does not provide. In Lieu of Flowers.
